What do Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady Ga Ga and Black Eyed Peas have in common other than winning Grammy awards this year? The answer is that none of them recorded one of my top 50 albums of 2009. No recognition for Dirty Projectors, Muse, Sunset Rubdown, Mars Volta, Antony and the Johnsons, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective ...?

"AAAAAAAAgggghhh
Butch won his first GRAMMY tonight!!!
So happy for him.
Told you it was going to be a good year.
Didn't I tell you that?!?!?!?!
Love love love that the Kings of Leon had a field day at the awards too because they are just delicious through and through.
And didn't you love Lady Ga Ga's dress of spun sugar?!? So dreamlike and fantastical. I want it.
Felt sad the Silversun Pickups didn't win in their category but lord.....look how long it took for poor Neil Young to win one.
But let me commend my darling Beyonce who absolutely raped and pillaged throughout the night like the beast she is.........
When she told Jay Z.........only the hottest man in the universe....... that she loved him.....
well it kind of made my heart pop.
She is the ONLY true POP star I have ever loved.
Usually I gravitate towards the more rebellious girls.....as you know.
But there's something about her that makes me believe in her.
She's authentic and honest and true.
Let's face it.
She's yummy through and through."
- My dear dear DEAREST Shirley Manson.

Newsflash: The Grammy's have very little to do with what is interesting, artistic, good. Most Grammy-winners will not end up on a Best Ever Album chart in the future. It's all about the major labels and it's all about sales. Thus, the Grammy's are a joke that most hard core music fans don't take very seriously. Case in point: The year Dylan won best album for Time Out of Mind was his first ever! I rest my case.

Yeah, sorry, but this shouldn't even be discussed at a place like this.

The music was so crappy this year that it's ridiculous.

Seriously, I think that the last album of the year award that deserved it was Alanis's Jagged Little Pill in 1996. The last one before that was Thriller in 1984.

Actually, to be fair, there were two or three years where I kind of agreed with the albums of the year (at least the best of the mainstream ones). That would be the years that Outkast-- The Love Below / Speakkerbox won and The O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack won respectively. Oh, and of course, Bob Dylan.

I mean, its always been an industry award show- focusing on quantity moreso than quality. This year more than any, the awards were basically a "thank you" to the highest selling acts for keeping the sinking ship afloat for juuuuust a little bit longer. But in all fairness I thought Beyonce's performance was good, and I have to give it to Pink for doing all that crazy shit in the air, just one slip away from what would have been a death plunge.

Grammy’s may at times look like other award shows that are based upon sales or chart positions but the GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position. Often sales reflect overall excellence.

Here is their official statement: “The recording industry's most prestigious award, the GRAMMY, is presented annually by The Recording Academy. A GRAMMY is awarded by The Recording Academy's voting membership to honor excellence in the recording arts and sciences. It is truly a peer honor, awarded by and to artists and technical professionals for artistic or technical achievement, not sales or chart positions.”
