Considering all the people I know who are into this band, this thread is a good reminder that I have promised like 100 times I'd try them. Is this the best place to do so?

I haven't listened to all their albums, but I'll give you what knowledge I have.

Opeth are definitely one of those bands that have evolved. Ever since they got Steven Wilson to produce for them (since Blackwater Park) they've become much more mellower and atmospheric. If that's your thing, start with Damnation or Ghost Reveries- both of which show off this mellower atmosphere. If you want to go into the deep-end (with the growling, that is) straight away, then Still Life or maybe My Arms, Your Hearse are probably the most potent. A good mix of the two is Blackwater Park.

It's your call, I guess. My favourite is Damnation, if that helps.

I would listen to Blackwater Park first, but this is a good place to go from there if you enjoy it.

Why no mention Orchid? That's my fave Opeth.

Anyway, this is pretty cool.

Ehh Opeth is fine an all (only album i really like that ive heard is Blackwater Park) but I think theyre way overrated for what they do. But then again I always see people that are like "I dont really like metal but like this" so I guess thats p cool. Just not my thing.

This is my favourite Opeth album, and besides the debut the only one I feel is strong all the way through. I know Blackwater Park is often hailed as their masterpiece, but while it contains some good moments ("Harvest" is great), I feel like that is when they started to lose their edge and become kinda predictable and *gasp* boring. I'm not including their latest album when I say that, though, as that one seem quite different.
