Quote:
No Wave was a short-lived movement in NYC in the late 1970s which took the ethics of Punk Rock but discarded melody and catchiness and replaced them with such features as extreme noise, distortion, feedback, angular rhythms, stream-of-conciousness lyrics, psychotic vocals, minimalism, abnormal tunings, dissonance and other unusual factors. The original movement essentially lasted from 1976-1979 and featured bands like Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, Mars, DNA and James Chance & The Contortions. The most well-known document of the era is the Brian Eno-produced No New York compilation.

While not part of the original movement, numerous bands have arisen which were influenced by the original movement and have themselves been labelled No Wave, such as Sonic Youth, The Birthday Party and Liars.

Quote:
No wave is not a clearly definable musical genre with consistent features. Various groups drew on such disparate styles as funk, jazz, blues, punk rock, avant garde, and experimental. There are, however, some elements common to most no wave music, such as abrasive atonal sounds, repetitive driving rhythms, and a tendency to emphasize musical texture over melody

Essential No Wave albums:

Essential No Wave EPs:

I'll lay down the ground rules/suggestions I think people should adhere to.
i) An album/ep needs three upvotes to earn a spot in the essential lists
ii) If you have found an album please share where you found it with the people who want it
iii) A little description about the albums you listened to will encourage others to listen and will make the feature run smoothly
iv) I'm going to include everything that gets three votes, don't upvote something if you don't think it's the genre in question
v) An upvote is basically just a (+1) with the album title beside it, which means in total 4 people will have to agree on it before it goes into the op
vi) If an album receives three upvotes and I don't cop let me know
vii) Go hunting for albums, half the fun is finding the album before everyone else does

Liquid Liquid by Liquid Liquid

I'm living for the day someone remixes Scraper, it's such a fucking tune. The rest are great too. More upbeat than anything else i've heard from the genre

Beat It Down by Y Pants

This is an album that took me by surprise, the songs are like snippets of something more grand not fully formed, which is fucking awesome, less is more and all that. It's metallic almost, it's choppy and the lead singer's voice isn't the best in the world, but it has charm and grace. It's on my chart too, i'm cool.

The Ascension by Glenn Branca

This is how I expected No Wave to sound prior to ever hearing anything, I don't think a genre name has ever been so perfect for an album. It's very easy to get lost in this one(i fuckign hate that term), but the little kinks and imperfections never allow your mind to wander, they there is always something to grab you.

No New York by Various Artists
Well everyone knows about this; Brian Eno decided to have an anthology of these NYC outcasts and got four songs from four essential bands of the era on the record. Apart from the fact that I hate Lydia Lunch's moaning, this has some of the best "beauty out of noise" moments in rock history.

Lesson No. 1 by Glenn Branca

At least as good as The Ascension.

Buy by James Chance & The Contortions

Underrated coolness. With Sax.

In Gut's House by UT

Another favorite. Girls band. With violin.

Out Of Line by Mofungo

Found this album through Norman.

Glenn Branca is great obviously, I always wished Theoretical Girls would have made a full album because a few of the songs I've heard that exist around the internet I really enjoy.

Aside from that, I know Lounge Lizards were associated with the scene, although I'm not sure how well they fit into it as a true representation of no wave. And as much as I hate to be the first person to mention them, early Sonic Youth and Swans were a notable part of the scene, although they went on to become popular with much different sounds.

Suicide was also associated with that scene, also under the impression Foetus and Einsturzende Neubauten mixed it up with people involved in no wave music. steve buscemi and vincent gallo apparently come from the no wave movie movement.

Two that spring to mind:

Honeymoon In Red by Lydia Lunch

One Two Punch by Don King

However No New York is the essential album/compilation for this genre.

EDIT: And listening to Primitive Calculators, that has a No Wave vibe.
