I've been listening to a lot of Kinks lately, and I decided to start an appreciation thread for this criminally underappreciated band.

So when one talks about the greatest bands of the British Invasion, the same names always come up: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and sometimes The Who. The Kinks are often left off that list or relegated to second tier status. In my opinion, this is very wrong. The Kinks are every bit as important and influential as The Beatles or the Stones. Over the course of their career they went from raw garage rock to music hall and a lighter folk influenced pop to a brief fling with country rock to a vaudeville influence to arena rock. Their golden period from about 1966-1970 is almost and sometimes every bit the equal of The Beatles. The Kinks had one of rock n roll's all-time greatest songwriters in Ray Davies, especially in the lyric department. Lennon / McCartney were great tunesmiths, but they couldn't write lyrics as great as Ray Davies and often Davies was both a great lyricist and great tunesmith, so he had the whole package. They made three (maybe four) absolutely classic albums in the 60's, wrote what has to be one the top five ballads ever written, Waterloo Sunset, and influenced both punk and Brit pop in a big way. Yet they don't seem to get their due. The casual music fan knows probably two, maybe three songs of theirs (You Really Got Me, Lola, and possibly All Day and All of the Night).

So who else here thinks the Kinks are tragically underrated both on this site and by music fans in general? If you agree, why do you think they're not more well known? Or if you prefer, just tell me what you think of The Kinks. Favorite albums, songs? Post You tube clips if you want. God save the Kinks!

Shit yes. If you asked me which I prefer, Beatles or Kinks, I'd go with Kinks. Ray Davies is one of the, if not the, greatest songwriters of the 20th Century.

Favorite albums are Arthur, Village Green Preservation Society, Muswell Hillbillies and Misfits.

Yes The Kinks are tragically underrated by music fans in general. While their albums aren't ranked high on this site they are rated well on this site. The Kinks are my favorite band. Part of the reason they are under ranked on this site is that many don't feel their albums rank among the top 50 greatest albums of all time. This may be due to their lack of commercial success, popularity, influence or musical impact, etc.

They are often considered to be almost a cult band. Recently many other artists have started giving them the credit that is long overdue. Artists influenced by The Kinks include punk rock groups such as the Ramones, The Clash, and The Jam, new wave and heavy metal acts like The Pretenders and Van Halen, and modern Britpop groups such as Oasis, Blur, and Pulp. Pete Townshend, particularly influenced by the group's sound, said: "The Kinks were ... quintessentially English. I always think that Ray Davies should one day be poet laureate. He invented a new kind of poetry and a new kind of language for pop writing that influenced me from the very, very, very beginning."

The Kinks had five Top 10 singles on the US Billboard chart. Nine of their albums charted in the Top 40. In the UK, the group had seventeen Top 20 singles along with five Top 10 albums. The RIAA has certified four of The Kinks' albums as gold records.

The group received the Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Service to British Music", and in 1990, their first year of eligibility, the original four members of The Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Kinks were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in November 2005.
