This is no accurate way of determining the best British/Irish album ever but it should be fun. Basically its a tournament, I randomly pair together two of the albums below and the next five posters decide which one wins (ie which one they think is better) and the winner advances to the next round. But I still need more albums so all suggestions are welcome (I'll edit the list to include them), once I have 64 we'll start.

1. Revolver - The Beatles *

That's a very good list and I think you've probably captured most of the notable albums. Some possible additions (but perhaps 'B' league depending on how you look at things)-
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Parachutes - Coldplay
Closer - Joy Division
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Synchronicity - The Police
Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
Technique - New Order

(apologies if any duplicates)

Struggled with bands that are Anglo-American like Fleetwood Mac and perhaps The Police shouldn't be included on that basis but I guess the definitions get a bit blurry when some band members are not British. If the prominent band member or majority of the band is English then perhaps that outweighs maybe having a foreign bass guitarist or drummer... I don't know...

(I suppose it's a bit insulting to U2 to think of them as 'British' but if it was a UK and Ireland list they could be included. )

Sure I'll add them in thanks and though it stings my Irish heart to do so Wink <moans about 700 years of oppression> I'll include Irish albums (which was a good idea btw I should have done it in the first place)

Firstly, I want to say that I love the idea. Lets run with it!

Secondly, albums for your consideration

Origin of Symmetry - Muse
Disraeli Gears - Cream
Wheels of Fire - Cream
Fresh Cream - Cream
Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
So - Peter Gabriel

If you consider The Jimi Hendrix Experience as English, then you certainly have to include
Are You Experienced
Electric Ladyland

I also think Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd is worthy of your consideration

Lastly, I do like the Arctic Monkeys, but i'm not sure that the album deserves consideration of the best ever status. It doesn't have quite the potential to stand the test of time, very much like earlier Beatles albums.

My votes for one seeds: Revolver, Ziggy Stardust, IV, and Dark Side of the Moon. The only reason I don't stack the one seeds with beatles albums is because that just wouldn't be fair.

go March Madness

I put in the Arctic Monkeys cause I was pretty sure someone would suggest them if I didn't but you're right they probably aren't worthy of contention.

I'll add your other suggestions but I'm unsure of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cause although 2/3s of the band were English it was built around Hendrix himself. If anyone else has thoughts on whether or not the Experience should be included I'd be happy to hear them.

If we are to include U2, then I guess it opens the option to also perhaps include some of these other Irish albums:

My Bloody Valentine Loveless
The Pogues If I should fall from the grace of God
Thin Lizzy Live And Dangerous
Van Morrison Moondance

(from a list of the top 50 Irish albums http://www.cluas.com/bestalbums/default.htm)

Well Live and Dangerous is great but its more of a live/best of than an album theres two spots left so I'll put in Moondance and If I should fall from the grace of God.

Using a random number generator

1st round
Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
vs
Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

First five votes decide (unless in the event five votes aren't nessecary, for example if say the first 3 of you voted for the same album the two other votes wouldn't be nessecary).

Dire Straits wins that one for me, probably because I grew up with that album and it's actually a pretty good selection of songs with exception maybe of Walk of Life. The Kate Bush album is difficult to compare but as I'm a guitar person, I appreciate more Mark Knopfler.
