Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 83.0/100, a mean average of 81.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.8.

Instrumentally, this is probably Frank Zappa's strongest release including everything he did with the Mother Of Invention. The music on here just feels so full of life and ideas that it is so easy to get lost in the soundscapes he creates. This is primarily done through the use of his guitar which is simply phenomenal and it displays the control and quality he has over the instrument. On every track he shines with the guitar highlights for me being The Gumbo Variations and Willie The Pimp. We are treated to a diverse array of instrumentation as well with fantastic performances from his whole ensemble. A special mention has to be given to the incredible work from Ian Underwood who stands out as a vital piece of the puzzle which makes this all come together. The compositions from Zappa are just superb also with each one being allowed to breathe and given time to develop so that at the end of each track you go into the next one feeling extremely fulfilled with what you have heard. Overall, Zappa displays his musical genius once again with some progressive jazz rock that stood out at the time it was released and still stands out today as a musical masterpiece.

This is great jazz rock album, it has weird moments but sounds really cool. The only thing I would complain about is the vocals and lyrics on Willie The Pimp, they ruin a song for me on which i admire Zappa's musicianship as on whole record. I was surprised that I enjoyed that as I mostly hate his work with Mothers Of Invention.

I enjoy that music in the 60s just got really weird for a time, and Zappa was king of embracing the weird.

If you've ever thought jazz music is boring, you should give this a try, it will change your mind.

My favorite from Zappa. One of the few from him I still listen to with any regularity. Great fusion, great cameo from Beefheart

“A beautiful and madness piece”

Cuando escuche este disco no lo entendía. Ahora que lo entiendo veo su belleza. De todos modos no es el tipo de jazz que me gusta más. Soy más de las cosas melódicas. Sin embargo, el disco entretiene bastante
