Gosh. I liked this album and a lot of Brand New songs I used to listen to in High School. It's too bad knowing that the lead singer was doing bad stuff w/ underage girls. IIRC the same allegations didn't stop Bowie from taking a bunch of high spots for album of the year. It certainly is disappointing and difficult to separate the music from the musicians who are flawed humans.

I wonder if this'll still show up on any best of the year lists. It's definitely high on my list. But it sucks that Jesse Lacey is such a scumbag piece of shit.

I wonder if this will start slipping down the charts now what with the Lacey scandall.

And this is just how it goes. I would by lying to myself if I still didn't think this was among the best of the year (or this decade), even if it was a guilt trip from the polluted mind of a total scumbag. Even if the music itself is held in high regard, it's likely (as well as Brand New's entire body of work) to be hurridely thrown to the dustbin of musical history- perhaps in the end a necessary sacrifice... even if it doesn't change my direct opinion specifically about the album's music, or any of the positive things I have gotten from their music over the years despite's it's now-toxic association with Lacey, one bit.

Yet another stand-alone placement piece by my personal favorite band. No two albums ever sound the same, which accentuates them all the more. This album is no exception. While borrowing guitar work from Daisy, melody structures from The Devil and God, and lyricism from Deja Entendu, they somehow progress their sound even further, to the point where it's something we've never heard from them. Superb guitar work, superb lyricism that touches on social constructs and current events in a way no one has yet to in this modern generation of emo, dynamic through the roof (as per usual). Not to mention how rewarding subsequent listens are (as I'm learning). Consistent, cohesive, dark, beautiful, everything I expect from them, and the perfect ending to a damn near perfect career. 9/10.

I have personally never listened to Brand New, and upon discovering how positively reviewed this album was I decided to give it a listen. What we have here are anthemic rock songs and ballads that are emotionally powerful, meticulously composed, and produced to perfection. It is refreshing to hear rock music as passionate as this with the amount of mainstream hip-hop that is out there today. This is one of, if not the best rock album of the year, and all of these tracks have this certain quality to them that's hard to describe, that makes this album feel like a classic already.
