Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 17% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a mean average rating of 74.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 75.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.6.

Good music, but it is far of Lonerism and Currents level

As a Tame Impala fan from day one this album is basic. I think it's catchy, sure. But as my standards as a day one fan have climbed the mountains of Kevin's continuous exploration as a writer, this album left a lot to be desired. Where his past albums were rock perfection, breaking the boundaries of rock and pop, this album is a cop out disco album. 40/100

I'll preface this by saying I got into Tame Impala a couple months before the release of Currents. I remember "Elephant" was used in the Blackberry Z10 commercial and I honestly thought it was some little known John Lennon song. However, I really immersed myself with Lonerism and some Innerspeaker songs. I thought the blend of alt/garage rock with a heavy dose of psychedelic was new and fresh. Currents, though sonically interesting, is a step back in my opinion. Does it have some masterful songs? Yes. Does it have underwhelming songs? Undoubtedly. I liked the disco influence, but not as much as the previous work.

That brings us to this album, which kind of seems lost in the production genius that is Kevin Parker. I think the sound is somewhere between Lonerism and Currents, but I think it meanders a bit too much. Like an A- tier athlete without a team. The overall production is still top notch, but there isn't anything too adventurous in the sound, other than its layering. It's like diving into a pool of sonically-enhanced production, getting out, letting the water air dry off you for 5 minutes, then diving in again. The music hits you immediately, but there isn't much surprise once you get past the 2 minute mark. There are some great songs, but the album, overall, just kind of lingers around and is just "there".

I'll always be excited to see where Parker goes with a new album, and I do hope he continues to put out new Tame Impala music, but I hope he 1) adds more interesting guitar licks as he is a great guitarist with interesting sounds and 2) has more vision for his overall albums. Unfortunately, Tame Impala is becoming that band that I'm hesitant to see live because the jammy quality of the band is starting to dwindle as the drum machines and track looping is starting to take center stage, giving less of an organic live feel.

The more you listen to this album the better it is. I think if you are a Tame Impala fan you need to subvert your expectations about what you are going to hear. It’s an experience, and what a delight that we still have bands that are willing to take you on a journey if only you have the patience to let them.
