Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a mean average rating of 79.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 80.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 17.0.

Very happy to have personally discovered this band/Steven Wilson just fairly recently thanks to this website. Not very happy that it took this long and I'm quite disappointed that no one had turned me on to them before.

Try as I might I just couldn't get into 2000's 'Lightbulb Sun' bar 1 or 2 tracks . Unperturbed I've had a crack at 2002's 'In Absentia' and I'm pleased to report I enjoyed this quite a bit even if it did sadly remind me of Dream Theatre in parts

I definitely appreciated the more uptempo moments in "Trains" , "Wedding Nails" , "The Creator Has a Mastertape" and "Strip The Soul". Having said that slow piano closer "Collapse The Light Into Earth" is just about the album highlight ending things on an absolute high

Unfortunately its far from a perfect album with Prog Tracks "Lips Of Ashes" , "Gravity Eyelids" and "Prodigal" lacking punch and could easily have been left off

Neo-Prog at its finest

One of my favourite albums of Steven Wilson Band. "Blackest Eyes" and "Trains" two of the best songs of the band. Superb.

This was the first Porcupine Tree album I bought. And I think that might be the reason why it's still my favourite. It's an album that demonstrates the full range of progressive music that Porcupine Tree has become famous for.
From Steven Wilson's guitar work (e.g. Trains) to Richard Barbieri's atmospheric keyboards (e.g. .3) I think that this is the best album to listen to if you are new to Porcupine Tree.

I like Porcupine Tree a lot, but I can't get into this album as much as Deadwing or Blank Planet. It's very nice, still, and shows how good this band can really be. Trains is the best song on the record.

Wow, where has this album been my whole life.
This was a band my friends always talked about in the early 2k's but I never gave a chance.
over 10 years later I listened to this album finally and I am blown away.

Equal mix of the finest song craftsmanship and ambient-soaked interludes. A lush, lengthy train voyage to the end of summer.
