Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a mean average rating of 85.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 86.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.5.

Aged like a fine wine, very influential on latter progressive metal folks.

The closest thing to a conventional album this band ever made, this being Crimson they still subvert that term. Prog Metal before it was a thing, even the long winding jam track (Providence) is probably their best. Starless is a tour de force of the prog genre, the way it begins slow then builds up into a crescendo of fury before decapitating into a quite finale. Closes the chapter of the 70s on a high .

Carried by Starless, one of the best songs to come out of that entire decade. The reprise at the end of Starless is nothing short of magical.

A much heavier affair than previous works. Moments of sheer foreboding are created with lead guitar and violin interplay on 'Providence'. A beautiful Mellotron string provides the foundation for 'Starless', where the lead vocal shares centre stage with meandering saxophone arpeggios. Overall the album has a much darker sinister feel to it and could quite easily have been used as a backing for a 70's horror movie, in particular the track 'Starless' and hell, what a sax solo lies in wait when this track climaxes!

Dang this is good, ain't it? I love Fallen Angel. It is a really heartfelt ballad. It's hard to beat the build up on Starless. Definitely a cathartic song.

This album is really great!! It starts slowly (for me, because most people seem to enjoy "Red", but it's a very bland track IMO) but then it gets better and better until you reach the climax in the end of "Providence", my favorite track. Maybe that's because I'm a bassist, but this track really gets me, what a fantastic job John Wetton did on the bass! And then the closer "Starless" is amazing, mainly because of the instrumental part. The first part is a bit pink-floydish and unoriginal, but later on with the instrumental bit, that's where it gets to be great. Fantastic album, better than ITCOTCK if you want my opinion!
