Maybe I don't understand the hype of this album or Kanye's creativity as an artist but I can see the talent it takes to create an album like this from a hip hop perspective

The sheer balls of this guy to follow up MBDTF with this.

undoubtedly a polarising album, but for me this is one of the greatest albums of all time, kanye documents his struggle with trying to make a change but being overwhelmed by his ego and lovelife all over incredible innovative instrumentals, the energy that this album creates is phenomenal.

I think it works best as a whole than any individual track, has some moments where it's enjoyable and along w/ Pablo is certainly a departure from Kanye's earlier and a stark contrast with the consonant humorous early part of his career with Dark Fantasy being the inflection point.

It's not a bad album but it's my least favorite in his discography just below the more melodic and influential 808's & silly yet infectious graduation (and Pablo). It's a good career though when your worst half of your discography is Pablo Yeezus 808's and Graduation because there's a lot of good to be found on Kanye's below-average albums.

This album for me is like Radiohead's King of Limbs, I'm glad it's there and I'm aware of what's in it, but I rarely go for it when I am in the mood for said artist.

God damn. I'm really loving the hell out of this record. Find it a lot more outside of the box. And yes I do know that I catch some influence from the abrasive side like Death Grips. But weirdly enough this is on the same level as my favorite Death Grips album. Just by the organized chaos. Feel like I could go into more detail why I am liking this album a lot. Might be my favorite out of the three. But still got 4 records left to go within Kanye's discog.

This album has made me re-evaluate a lot of how I think about music. As one who comes from a classic rock background, as I suspect most (or at least a good number) on this site do, it's hard not to think of Kanye as one of those new rappers writing pop-rap for a bunch of teenagers to drink and party to. To a certain extent, that not incorrect. But this album is a whole lot more.

While MBDTF was definitely an artistic statement, it was one designed to generate radio hits. Yeezus is, to a certain extent, anti-commercial. Or at least as anti-commercial as any serious album by the most popular artist in the world could be. On Sight is abrasive as hell. The same is true of most of the rest. As hard as it might be to understand coming from the high-brow land of rock n' roll, this is a thoroughly artistic, not commercial, endeavor.

The next hurdle of course is that you might point out, "Look at all the shitty stuff he says! He's just vulgar, obscene, and misogynistic!". Again, you would not be entirely wrong. In defense, I call to the stand Lou Reed. He in fact named this one of his favorite albums of the past decade or so shortly before passing away, but thats not what he's been called to the stand for. Instead, it is for his magnum opus track, Sister Ray. A song almost universally revered by rock "oldheads," it literally details a drug fueled orgy, in the strongest language that 60's would allow. More evidence could be presented, such as the Sex Pistols in general. These artists aren't considered vulgar unintelligent provocateurs, but as visionaries of the art form that is music. The same is true of Kanye West. If one reframes his vulgar digressions as either playful jibes or an attempt to see how far boundaries can be pushed (they are often both), one gets a figure not unlike the late Lou Reed.

That said, I don't think that he is immune from criticism. I'm still unsure how I feel about the politics surrounding using Billy Holiday's "Blood On The Leaves" as the basis for a song about ecstacy fueled affairs. But overall the album is a pretty awesome listen. Just a quick shoutout to the real highlights of the album: I Am A God is a banger, and quite a good distillation of Kanye himself; a self-aware, yet flamboyantly excessive exercise in self-worship. Hold My Liquor, on the other hand, is a gorgeous work of production.

Its got Hits and Misses, about evenly split. So i would call it a little overrated but i guess its subjective.

When I first heard this album, I was wildly disappointed. Now, after years I finally get what Kanye was trying to do. This is brash, wild, and experimental hip hop executed very well. One of the key records of 2013.
