The commenter that said this sounds like a combination of Barry Manilow and Billy Joel, is accurate. The pros and cons of those two musicians can definitely be found here. Escape was a hit novelty song for a reason, and although some of the other tracks contain the same sardonic humor, they aren't nearly as catchy. Still, most of them are cheesy enough to be kind of... good? Album as a whole is good for a listen, if you don't take it too seriously.
If you ever wondered what it would sound like if Barry Manilow mated with Billy Joel, here's your answer.
I was 11 years old when I got this one, more for "Him" (US #6) than for "The Pina Colada Song" (US #1). The rest of the album is ok, most of the songs walking that fine line between clever and corny.
Holmes never had any more Top 40 hits after this but he went on to find success writing musicals (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) and a #3 pop hit for the Jets (You Got It All).
