Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)

This artist is rated in the top 2% of artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a mean average rating of 82.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 83.4/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 16.2.

For people saying The Beach Boys didn't play their own instruments, while yes, at Brian Wilson's peak the Wrecking Crew played most the material (which was more due to the rest of the band being on tour than them not being able to do so), after that The Beach Boys started to play their material. And I do in all honesty consider the 9-album run The Beach Boys had from 1966's Pet Sounds to 1973's Holland the most consistently amazing output by any band ever. It was also not just Brian doing everything. Carl Wilson stepped in as a producer for most of the material from '69 onward, Dennis, Bruce and Carl all wrote some awesome material, and yes, the material by Brian slipping through every so often was breathtaking, too.

Always a sense of unfulfilled potential because of Brian's health. A very sad story.

I never got all the fuss. They were indeed creative at times, but overall, pretty standard stuff and often downright lukewarm.

Am I the only one who finds the harmonies irritating after several songs? Pet Sounds is a great record, Surf's Up is good. I find comparisons with the Beatles faintly ridiculous they are a very different group with no where near the range of classic output.

Great band and Pet Sounds is a classic, but without Brian Wilson, this group wouldn't be as beloved as they are now. Wilson made that band what they are. The harmonies didn't exactly hinder them either.
