Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)

This artist is rated in the top 4% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 79.6/100, a mean average of 79.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.4/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 13.6.

I've been trying to learn to play their songs and I have to say the song writing is stellar. Massive choons, great singing and amazing tone for both electric and acoustic. Fascinating backstory to the band as well.

Stills met ex Byrd Crosby in the Summer of 1968 after the break-up of Buffalo Springfield who then introduced Nash and the trio instantly recognised a musical empathy and decide to form a band. After the contractual niceties have been resolved.

When they set about planning a tour it soon become apparent that their primarily acoustic line up required a lead guitarist to give the sound and songs some ‘bite’. Who better to ask than Still’s old sparring partner from Buffalo Springfield Neil Young who joined on the understanding that he will also continue to pursue his solo career.

When the four were working together they represented the peak of American popular music of the late sixties and early seventies. No band during this period expounded the difference between ‘hip’ and ‘straight’ America and as such their cultural influence over this period should not be underestimated. Always true to their ‘hippy’ roots their songs were about love and peace but all four possessed a keen political intelligence. It is also true to say that, with the possible exception of the Beatles, no band has contained such a strong team of songwriters or musicians. All four were gifted guitarists with Stills being a superb all round musician and Young being one of the great electric guitarists of the age. In addition all four were outstanding vocalists and their work contains arguably the best vocal harmony work rock music ever produced.

Sadly the strong individual personalities that existed were to mean that the four would only work together very sporadically, often choosing to work on solo projects or as duos. Whilst the four would reunite for the first time in the mid 70’s it is their first two albums show them at their very best.
