Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 53.1/100, a mean average of 51.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 51.0/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 31.6.

@9999 the artist rating system is here isn’t the most reliable… Artists that are detested often get skewed ratings. If it’s any consolation, you’ll find that the majority of serious users here refrain from rating artists. I certainly don’t want to spend my time listening to every single Taylor Swift track in order to come up with a proper rating. I suspect that few of us old timers have or ever will, either. This is an album rating site! The most accurate ratings are tied to proper albums. Female artists are celebrated here btw. We’d love to hear what you think of the discographies of your favorite female artists ✅
Guys, I'm not trying to use the sexist card or accuse anyone of anything here, but I think we need to reconsider how we assess the work of female artists on this website, especially the ones that are massively successful. Let's compare the average rating given to four of the biggest solo artists from the 80s:
Michael Jackson: 80/100
Janet Jackson: 67/100
Prince: 82/100
Madonna: 68/100
We can take that further by taking a look at the ratings of female artists like Lady Gaga (58/100), Beyoncé (62/100) and Rihanna (48/100). Seriously, what the fuck are these ratings?
Now, onto Taylor Swift (who currently has a 53/100). Yes, she mostly writes love songs. Yes, she is extremely successful. Yes, she mostly caters to women. And yes, the media is constantly shoving her music down our throats. I myself have been undervaluing Swift's talent for years, but after being almost forced to dive deeper into her work (my sister is a huge fan of hers) and trying my best to get rid of my prejudice, I've come to really appreciate some of the things she does. Maybe Swift's biggest sin is that her point of view is inextricably feminine, and we know how hard it is for some music bros to take that seriously. I see many people here being almost offended by the fact that she sells a lot of records. Why is being successful such a crime? Why are we so obsessed with trying to look edgy and cool by looking down on what's popular? This is not a superficial fad that goes away in a year or two. Swift has been captivating the hearts of listeners for almost 15 years now. I say this all the time: if a music artist is able to sell millions of records for that long, they must be doing something right, so let's leave the disdainful attitude aside for a moment and try to understand why.
The way I see it, yes, Taylor is definitely not be the greatest singer-songwriter of her generation, but very few artists have been able to create a lyrical world that is so unmistakably theirs. A Taylor Swift song is a Taylor Swift song, not by virtue of her singing talent or the music itself (although she definitely has a great ear for tune and melody), but because of her lyricism, recurrent imagery and narrative prowess. She may not be as good a lyricist as Lana because she's not nearly as consistent, but when she's at her best, I don't think she's that far off. I mean, just take the 10-minute version of All too well. That's Taylor working at the height of her powers, and it's an extraordinarily well-written song and one that not many singer-songwriters could have pulled off as deftly. And even at her worst (and she's definitely written some duds throughout her career), Taylor's lyrics are still a cut above most of what you're gonna hear in the mainstream. She's a savvy storyteller who uses specificity to talk about the universal, which is why she's managed to appeal to so many people, and makes it look effortless (proof of how important her lyrics have been to her success is that she's far more beloved in the English-speaking world than outside of it).
I agree that her discography is far from extraordinary, but she's written more than a few remarkable tracks over the years. If you could take all her best songs (the aforementioned All too well, Style, The last great American dynasty, Exile, Love story, Marjorie, Blank space, New romantics, Cardigan or Ivy, to name a few) and put them together, you would end up with a couple of really good records, which is something I don't think you could say about the likes of Justin Bieber, Drake or Ed Sheeran.
Look, I'm not here to tell anyone that they should love Taylor Swift. Like I said, I really like some of her songs, but I'm not a fan of her discography. I guess I'm just trying to assess whether she got her low rating as a result of taking a thorough look at her output and coming to the conclusion that her music isn't good (which is a perfectly valid opinion) or some users just chose to hate her because she's ever-present and has a passionate fandom mostly made up of young women.
Lame manufactured "music" and image that appeals to the lowest common denominator. 🤮
I will give her one star since she's not completely devoid of musical talent.
I'm chanting my rating from a 5/100 to a 55/100 and will add a second review now that I'm a little older. Let's get a few things clear: Taylor Swift makes music that appeals to a lot of people. She's smart at the music industry, a good wordsmith from time to time, a successful business person, and one of the most successful artists of all time. Taylor Swift is worth orders of magnitude more than my or anyone else's opinion on this website.
That said, I still think she mostly follows trends, and is successful because of her palatable public image, successful corporate marketing, and very privileged and opportunistic entry into the music industry.
No one has ever accused her of being a bad songwriter, her music is good. Her lyrics are good. No one's ever accused her of being groundbreaking or original either. From Max to Jack to Aaron, she finds the people who can make the commercially successful music she wants to create, and pays them a lot of money, and makes decent music. Puts out an album every couple years, everyone gets paid. It's a good deal for the people involved I'm sure, and people resonate with it.
Is she a top 10 pop artist of the last decade? In my opinion, no, not even close. I don't have a problem with anyone liking her sound, or her music, where I take issue with is when people put her on the level of Lennon and McCartney and dub her the greatest songwriter of the generation. Just no.... can we just pump the breaks with all that?
Taylor Swift is good. Her music is good. There's nothing wrong with liking Taylor Swift, there's an endearing floor and ceiling to her music which is the charm. She did her thing and it's for some people, and not for others. I listen to her music, give every album 3-4 listens, think "this is fine" then I forget about her until the next one and try to ignore the fact that everyone from CNN to the NFL is trying to push this on me. No she's not my favorite pop artist, and it upsets me that more people don't know about who the actual innovative pop artists are, but that's not Taylor's fault. She's not a music deity, and she's not a trash pop artist, she's just an enterprising businessperson who knows how to create commercially successful music. She's filling the void that someone else otherwise would have.
She is my favourite artist so this is why I gave her full scores!
Doesn't deserve the commercial success. Objectively, the songs are basic. Mass manipulative writing is disgusting to me as she always seem to antagonize the men in her life that doesn't want to be with her anymore yet she seems to yearn for a man's affection, this leads to an influence over a toxic fandom as they normalize antagonizing men and overlooking individualistic standards. She is a good artist, yet everything about her writing is unbearable. I liked that one song, Lover.

Disliking something popular doesn't make you special.
Taylor Swift makes incredible pop music. She's not trying to churn out the new "OK Computer," she's trying to make catchy, fun, lyrical pop music. While what's on the radio from her can be intolerable, she focuses on whole albums (a rarity for pop stars nowadays)
Popularity does not imply quality.
