Reviewing the King of Jazz is quite an honourable thing to do. Even though Jazz is not my favourite music genre, there is no denying the overall impact it had upon the world. Rock might have more variety and a much wider fanbase, but in order to become a great Jazz musician, you’ve got to put more effort into it and be quite talented. Miles Davis is the one who has the best-selling and most critically acclaimed Jazz record of All Time. He also has other quality stuff, ranging from older relaxing albums like “’Round About Midnight”, to newer, jazz fusion ones like “Bitches Brew” and “In a Silent Way”. His music is not for everyone, but if you’re really into this genre, then he might be the most essential artist.

Miles Davis was a genius. He was extremely talented, he assembled some of the most vital bands in jazz, his use of mutes was exceptional, he was able to create an incredible amount of emotion with his playing style, and he discovered talent that would go on to become stars of their own. However, I think what elevates him to legendary status was his constantly evolving sound. He was a major player in almost every jazz movement that arose in his lifetime, and several of those movements were spurred by him. He adapted every style to his own means, and surrounded himself with talent that would perfectly match his ambitions for his new sounds. Cool jazz, hard bop, third stream, modal jazz, post-bop, fusion, jazz-funk, you name it, he played it, and he played it his way. No other jazz musician had such an expansive and ever-changing career, and no other jazz musician was to bring his own sound and soul to every era of the music.

Not my favourite soloist and so not my favourite musician (even if he's still incredible on the trumpet) but he excelled on another quality wich is in my opinion way and way more important: composition. Restless, he was one of the few who was able to reinvent himself in something completely different and original but still true to himself. As another user put it, every new album of his amazes me, one after the other they are mind blowing. This for sure is my favourite artist ever, and the only one that come close to the definition of "a model" for me, because he thought me to always learn something new about myself.

One of the very few artist who, regardless of his genre, just has that indefinable quality that makes you want to continue buying each and everyone of his albums back to back. And even after all that, once you own them all, you still have no idea which one is his best - an inner turmoil, I'm sure, all recording artists wish they could impart upon their fans.

Miles Davis, possibly the coolest musician ever? quite possibly, which is an amazing feet considering he died of old age and most 'cool' musicians 'got it' early. But his endearing legacy of cool is based on his absolutely superb and astoundingly brilliant discography, his immeasurable talent, his legendary back-story and his achingly passionate drive to create exciting and explosively sincere music. So glad of his placing.
