Some clean-cut kids boys wrote some songs about love. Then they took a load of drugs. The 60s are a fascinating period. Soul was at its peak. Jazz saw some of its greatest releases. Rock exploded. Lyrical songwriting became more meaningful. And drugs took music to very strange new places.

Leonard Cohen doesn't need bells & whistles to make his songs interesting. Stripped down to nothing, his songs are an intricately constructed force of nature. Every single word is carefully constructed, perfectly poetic. His fluttering strings are delicate. And his weathered voice is filled with a sense of wisdom. Cohen's songs provide an introspective view of life and religion unlike any others. I personally prefer Songs From A Room over his debut and Songs of Love & Hate, if only by a very narrow margin.

While John Lennon's songwriting is generally the reason I love the Beatles, and it's McCartney's contribution to the second half of the record that places their final album on the top of many lists, I think what makes Abbey Road their best is Harrison's songs are two of his absolute best and even Ringo makes a listenable one.

Well, I grew up on 60s rock, so it's far more cemented into my persona. I don't feel soul was at it's strongest in album form. I love Sam Cooke, Otis, James Brown, and all 3 are included here, but as strong as they were, their albums could be pretty hit and miss. Otis' albums were often loaded with covers that failed to showcase his voice. I could probably use a Marvin Gaye record here though, but i prefer his 70s output.

I recall a 2003 'From The Vaults' comp but you are right. =P - But yeah there is a lot of rock canon overpowering soul and pop cuts though.

@Gowienczyk Pffft. Ronettes are at #24. And unless I'm mistaken, Goldie & The Gingerbreads never released a proper album. singles only. But I do also have Supremes, Shangri-Las, Martha & The Vandellas and The Crystals. How much more do you need? Shirelles were very close but didn't make the cut.
