Zerfas is the Indiana duo of Bryan and David Zerfas, brothers who along with some other local kids founded one of the coolest experimental psych acts of the era. The album was recorded over a year by a band who saved their every penny to invest it into this supreme art. Zerfas has an obvious 1968-1969 UK influence, sounding like perhaps what the Beatles or Small Faces might have achieved if they had continued into the '70s. These guys hit upon the usual acid themes of self-direction, elevation, and ultimate rebirth. The music is creative and takes multiple listens to uncover the tricks used ... You owe it to yourself to check out the deluxe limited 1994 reissue, if you can find one. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2019]

Although Zappa's jazz fusion masterpiece is nothing but a presentation of some-sort-of-live-album-with-studio-overdubs-sometimes, it is also somehow more than that - Zappa's famous satire (prominent most in "Dummy Up" and "Penguin In Bondage"), backed by what some would argue was his greatest band (As obvious through "Be-Bop Tango (of the Old Jazzmen's Church)" and "Echidna's Arf (Of You)"). Bruce Fowler's trombone solo in "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" can summarize the album - proof that, as Zappa put it himself, "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny." Berkeley's own Country Joe & The Fish made two stellar albums in the 1960s (along with some other less-than-stellar albums), my favorite of which is their second record "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die." For the sake of brevity, please check out my essay on this phenomenal album here: https://upvhq.blogspot.com/2018/08/country-joe-fish-i-feel-like-im-fixin.html [First added to this chart: 04/14/2013]

The Billy Miller band has been known by many names, including "Cold Sun", "Dark Shadows", and "The Daily Planet", but whatever the name, their 1970-71 album (recorded for Sonobeat Records but unreleased until 1989 when it was released on Rich Haupt's Rockadelic label) is a strange mescaline-fueled proto-punk masterpiece that comes highly recommended from many who have been experienced. The quintessential "Ra-Ma" is an elongated psychedelic symphony, having fantastic lyrics spewed by Billy Miller while accentuated by the ethereal ringing of his electric autoharp and fuzz of Tom McGarrigle's guitar. These guys were really something else. Historians will note that there is a distant Roky Erickson / 13th Floor Elevators connection here. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2019]

I bought this record on a whim as a young'un, took it home, and wow! It's remained a favorite since. Many not familiar with Spirit's music will know them for "I Got A Line On You" (from their sophomore LP) or that they're "that band Led Zeppelin ripped off" (which one?), but these guys deserve a bigger place in the spotlight. The playing is arguably early prog, and these guys were tight. The band boasts incredible musicians, including Randy California on guitar (who got his nickname when playing with Jimi Hendrix's band) and the towering baldheaded Ed Cassidy on drums (well-regarded jazz session musician). It's hard to encapsulate the greatness of this record, but it's certainly worth Googling to experience in full. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2019]

Incredibly stupid, incredibly fun, incredibly famous, incredibly Sgt. Pepper! The album's name has become a cultural phrase on its own, and rightly so. Sgt. Pepper stirred a generation and flipped the switch for many budding musicians. Whether existentialism should ever be paired next to isolationism is irrelevant, because Sgt. Pepper's Band is here to play, The Beatles are gone! It was truly an ingenious concept, it was a brilliant escape from cliche and expectation. George Harrison's "Within You Without You" is an astounding psychedelic composition that is debatably one of the Beatles' prettiest numbers. Sgt. Pepper occasionally has these psychedelic tendencies, but it is mostly pop-flavored-British-style. Its innovations come not from originality but from popularization of previously-explored material. Pepper is a collection and compilation of stolen concepts within a Beatles gatefold. But boy oh boy is it fun! [First added to this chart: 04/11/2013]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 17% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.3/100, a mean average of 87.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.9.

High quality comments and some nice choices. You clearly know the classics. Maybe you can try and include some >2000 albums you also enjoy apart from Radiohead's?

Wonderful chart. Great comments up to #25. You speak of lack of recognition: the Captain falls into that category. He is certainly off-putting at first listen, but his genius comes out with additional listens. Agree or disagree?

Fabulous chart.
I really need to get into Zappa, I've only heard Hot Rats and I liked it. Psychedelic music I love and experimental is interesting.
Wish the notes had carried on but the ones that are there are great, Very enthusiastic. Love this.

I love the Chart.
I´m too young to have been part of the music scene in the end of the 60´s...but maybe that was the best time for good music.
