Top 100 Music Albums of the 1970s by Tamthebam

This is my favourite decade my chart is dominated by Bowie, Elton John & Stevie Wonder but hey its the 70's. Electric Warrior was the first album I ever owned, so it has a special meaning for me, I still have the original vinyl copies of 50% of these albums. I have included some iconic "Best Of" albums that are regarded very highly, I love all types of music and I loved exploring music recommended by others, I discovered Soul and Country-Rock during this decade.

Another great Bowie album from the 70's (1971) this was the album before Ziggy and contains the standards Life On Mars, Changes & Oh You Pretty Things. But the album is more than that it shows Bowie progressing as a singer & songwriter Quicksand & The Bewlay Brothers are brilliant tracks and along with Queen Bitch & Andy Warhol make this a must have album. An amazing album so far ahead of its time. The instrumentals on Side 1 which open & close Side 1 are brilliant and there is Sound & Vision & Be My Wife I don't think Side 2 on low is as good as "side 2" on heroes and that pulls the album below Heroes. [First added to this chart: 09/26/2013]

A great Stevie Wonder album contains Smile Please, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Creepin', It Ain't No Use, Please Don't Go and the fantastic You Haven't Done Nothin' which was a dig at Richard Nixon. I prefer this album to Talking Book but not as much as Music Of My Mind [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

First heard this album when I was 17 and I still listen to it today its just special a Richard Perry produced album it has become a favourite all 10 tracks are good and Diana Ross sounds so soulful. Released just as Disco was happening so it contains a couple of dance tracks but mostly its a soul/RnB masterpiece. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

An overlooked great album by Bolan better than *The Slider" and lies 2nd to Electric Warrior for consistency . None of the tracks were released as singles an unusual event back then. Overall the album holds together as a complete unit with Bolan introducing a more soulful sound. Stand out tracks are Madonna, Born To Boogie, Street and Babe Shadow & Broken Hearted Blues. Another overlooked album would follow this - Zinc Alloy..... [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

A great album, not as highly regarded as a lot of his 70's albums but it it is for me one of the best albums he ever made. The Bitch Is Back is a great opener followed by the beautiful track Pinky it also contains the original and best version of Don't Let The Sun..... and an amazing closing track "Ticking". A brilliant debut album from Judie Tzuke and still her best. The title track & Stay With Me 'Till Dawn along with the beautiful For You are the stand out tracks. All the songs were written by Judie & Mike Paxman her musical collaborator. Paul Buckmaster was responsible for the string arrangements on Bring The Rain & Stay With Me.... overall the album has a pop/rock feel with Tzukes strong vocals the highlight. This and her next two albums were released on Elton John's Rocket label. [First added to this chart: 09/26/2013]

This has grown and grown on me over the years to ultimately be my favourite Floyd album. I find it has to be listened to as a whole over the overall impact to be achieved. [First added to this chart: 09/26/2013]

Ahead of its time when released in '79 this album is dominated by Lindsey Buckingham he seems to have taken control over the album. There are 5 Stevie Nicks songs of which Sara & Angel are the best. There are 6 Christine McVie songs the best of which are Brown Eyes & Never Forget the remaining 9 tracks are Lindsey Buckingham exploring new music & the results were at the time of release a complete surprise. The title track is amazing I love listening to it loud the drums vibrate through you. The album is now regarded as a classic. [First added to this chart: 09/26/2013]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 7% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.3/100, a mean average of 89.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.9.

We both have the 70's as our favourite decade and the number of exceptional albums to choose from is simply outrageous. That said, we have 25 albums in common ~ interestingly your #100: Dylan's Blood On The Tracks is my #1 ~ and that, better than anything, explains where our personal musical journey takes a different route. I was surprised to see some classic, in my mind, 70's UK artists missing ~ Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, The Who, The Clash (to name but a few). Overall a nice chart that I enjoyed wandering through.

Nice list, I like that you put “Heroes” above all other Bowie albums. That one seems to get a lot of hate lately.

This is a phenomenal list. Almost every album is deep on substance. Then there are some that are just great to listen to. Their substance comes from just how damn great they sound and make you feel (Rumours for example). Awesome.
