Top 100 Music Albums of the 1970s by Tamthebam

This is my favourite decade my chart is dominated by Bowie, Elton John & Stevie Wonder but hey its the 70's. Electric Warrior was the first album I ever owned, so it has a special meaning for me, I still have the original vinyl copies of 50% of these albums. I have included some iconic "Best Of" albums that are regarded very highly, I love all types of music and I loved exploring music recommended by others, I discovered Soul and Country-Rock during this decade.

This is regarded as Joni's 2nd best album. It is all that & more it is hard for me to separate this and my favourite Joni album Hejira. Court & Spark is therefore also my 2nd best Joni album. It is full of great songs the first 3 tracks being an example of Joni at her best. Overall the album has a jazzy feel to it which she would further explore in her next 3 albums before releasing Mingus a full jazz album. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

Pigs, Dogs, Sheep & more pigs ........... a brilliant album especially the track Dogs this was and is now my 2nd favourite Floyd album it hasn't aged as much as say some of their early albums from the sixties. It seamlessly runs one track into another and like The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon is best listened to as a whole. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

The 2nd proper album from Ms. Armatrading is an improvement on Whatevers for Us. This is mostly an acoustic album with some piano driven tracks the stand out tracks being Dryland, Cool Blue, Travelled So Far, Come When You Need Me & So Good. Overall a good album but better albums were to follow. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

I've grown to love this album above all the other Rod Stewart albums. Every Picture & Never a Dull Moment are also right up there but somehow this album just tops everything he has ever done. Hot Legs & You're Insane start the album at an amazing pace then the first ballad You're In My Heart slows it down only for it to pick up again and then slows right down for the last three tracks every one of which is 90/100.His cover of You Keep Me Hangin' On at 8 mins long takes the song somewhere else one of the best Motown covers I've heard and there are a lot. I first heard this album when I was 15 I thought it would be full of heavy rock which back then I avoided. I was so surprised by tracks like Stairway & Going To California and found out that they were a blues band first & foremost with folk leanings. I now love this album especially the tracks Black Dog & When The Levee Breaks it made me reassess what I regarded as "heavy rock" I now own their 8 studio albums of which Zep II is also an album I would recommend. This album suffers because it was preceded by the 4 greatest stones albums. O.K. its not as good as those 4 but it deserves to be judged in its own right it was one of the best albums released in 1973. Angie, Star Star, Winter, Silver Train & Heartbreaker are great songs and the other 5 aren't that bad. I still play this album and it has stood up well. [First added to this chart: 09/26/2013]

The album that Marvin wanted to release but had to fight Motown before Berry Gordy would release it, the rest is history it has become an ageless classic preaching peace, love, diversity and caution (Mercy Mercy Me, What's Going On, Inner City Blues & God Is Love ). Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 7% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.3/100, a mean average of 89.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.9.

We both have the 70's as our favourite decade and the number of exceptional albums to choose from is simply outrageous. That said, we have 25 albums in common ~ interestingly your #100: Dylan's Blood On The Tracks is my #1 ~ and that, better than anything, explains where our personal musical journey takes a different route. I was surprised to see some classic, in my mind, 70's UK artists missing ~ Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, The Who, The Clash (to name but a few). Overall a nice chart that I enjoyed wandering through.

Nice list, I like that you put “Heroes” above all other Bowie albums. That one seems to get a lot of hate lately.

This is a phenomenal list. Almost every album is deep on substance. Then there are some that are just great to listen to. Their substance comes from just how damn great they sound and make you feel (Rumours for example). Awesome.
