Top 100 Music Albums of the 1970s by Tamthebam

This is my favourite decade my chart is dominated by Bowie, Elton John & Stevie Wonder but hey its the 70's. Electric Warrior was the first album I ever owned, so it has a special meaning for me, I still have the original vinyl copies of 50% of these albums. I have included some iconic "Best Of" albums that are regarded very highly, I love all types of music and I loved exploring music recommended by others, I discovered Soul and Country-Rock during this decade.

A break thru album this is the album that brought Bowie to a wider audience. The first 4 tracks are legendary especially Starman & Moonage Daydream, it then tails of a little before hitting you with the last 3 tracks Ziggy, Suffragette City & Rock n Roll Suicide. It is regarded as his best album rightly so, it is just not my favourite. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

The first of Stevie's albums under his 2nd Motown contract. His previous album Where I'm Coming From was the first time he had delivered an album to Motown already finished. This was the follow up. This album is much under rated and deserves to be up there with Innervisions and Songs In The Key.... better than Talking Book and Fullfillingness... its tracks are diverse and more experimental than anything before. The stand out tracks being the first 3 tracks, and Girl Blue, Keep On Running and Seems So Long. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

A great album & their best every track is good even the Richard Carpenter Lead Vocal track ! Side 1 (tracks 1-6) is exceptional easy listening laid back music and the final 3 tracks are a brilliant way to close an album, Road Ode is a very underrated song. Karen Carpenter has a quality in her voice that melts your soul. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

This album passed me by in 1972 it wasnt until a few years later that I listened to this and his other early albums and discovered he made some great albums before Yellow Brick Road. This was his best album up to this point in his career. Honky Cat, Rocket Man & Amy stand out for me but the best song on this album is Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters the other tracks are solid, no weak track here. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

A very consistent Joni album in that all the tracks are strong and none is better than the other an album that should be listened to as a whole. A big step up from Blue in the jazzy feel of the album she really comes of age on this album and over the next few years follows it up with Court & Spark, Hissing Of Summer Lawns & Hejira 3 of her best ever albums. In my opinion this is the third best L.P. by T.Rex. Electric Warrior is a masterpiece and I now rate Tanx higher than The Slider. I can't put my finger on it but The Slider just lacks something that the other two have. Metal Gru, Telegram Sam and the title track are the best songs here followed by Buik MacKane and Chariot Choogle. [First added to this chart: 08/27/2013]

This the follow up to Every Picture isn't as good as its predecessor , but it is a good album, sounds a little rushed though maybe because it was the 7th album Rod/The Faces had released in the last 3 years (1969-72). The stand out tracks are Jimi Hendrix tribute Angel & the brilliant You Wear It Well. Mama You Been Om My Mind, True Blue & Los Paraguayos are also right up there. What Made Milwaukee Famous was also supposed to be on the album but for some reason was only released as a single [First added to this chart: 07/21/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 7% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.3/100, a mean average of 89.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.9.

We both have the 70's as our favourite decade and the number of exceptional albums to choose from is simply outrageous. That said, we have 25 albums in common ~ interestingly your #100: Dylan's Blood On The Tracks is my #1 ~ and that, better than anything, explains where our personal musical journey takes a different route. I was surprised to see some classic, in my mind, 70's UK artists missing ~ Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, The Who, The Clash (to name but a few). Overall a nice chart that I enjoyed wandering through.

Nice list, I like that you put “Heroes” above all other Bowie albums. That one seems to get a lot of hate lately.

This is a phenomenal list. Almost every album is deep on substance. Then there are some that are just great to listen to. Their substance comes from just how damn great they sound and make you feel (Rumours for example). Awesome.
