The first rock-opera. And if that sounds insulting nowadays, here, the freshness of the songwriting (Pete Townshend), the clever instrumentation (an orchestral scope with no orchestra but mostly acoustic guitars and piano), and the general coming-of-age of the band, particularly singer Roger Daltrey, make this twisted story of a deaf, dumb and blind boy-turned- pinball wizard-turned- new messiah- turned pariah sound perfectly natural and understandable. And enjoyable.

It doesn't matter if you like or not "A whiter shade of pale". It is not on this album. How can one describe rock music as fine as this? Ambitious but not preposterous, serious yet light. A gorgeous piece of work.

From "Gimme shelter"s ominous intro to the last fading notes of "You can't always get what you want", this, along with the Beatles' "Abbey Road", is the sound of the 1960s, and with them a whole era, coming to an end.
