The Cribs are such a brilliant live band and had already released a couple of charming if patchy albums before this one. Wow, what a step up this was in songwriting, just like when The Jam went from The Modern World to All Mod Cons on their third album. [First added to this chart: 11/23/2013]

I wrote in the entry for my favourite Ride album ‘Nowhere’ that the band kinda lost me on this album and at the time that was very much the case. I wanted ‘Decay’ not ‘Making Judy Smile’, I wanted distortion not 60’s pop nostalgia. I also remember seeing them on this tour pretty much being blown off stage by Mercury Rev doing 20 minutes of Very Sleepy Rivers...that’s what I wanted not this. It may have taken me 20 odd years to finally realise this albums greatness but at least I got there in the end. [First added to this chart: 06/09/2019]

Side 1 of this album is just so perfect, a real slow burner with great, great songs. The bass really pins the tracks whilst the brass punctuates and then on top of that you have Otis's amazing voice. Change is Gonna Come is my pick here but so many other great songs including Respect and My Girl which is just one of the most perfect pop songs ever recorded. [First added to this chart: 01/06/2014]

From the start to finish it doesn't let up with so many of the bands greatest tracks on show such as Love Song, Smash It Up and the hilarious I Just Can't Be Happy Today. Anti pope is also fantastic with it's 'magic bus' soundalike instrumental middle. [First added to this chart: 11/15/2013]

Brilliant collection of songs from his peak period. The first 9 tracks and the song Wild Flowers are all stunning but I just feel it needed cutting down to 12-13 tracks and it would then have been a perfect album and in my top 50. [First added to this chart: 10/11/2014]

This was going to be their debut album, instead they signed with a major and re-recorded many of the tracks here for the album You Can't Hide Your Love Forever. YCHYLF was good but they should have stuck with Postcard to release Ostrich Churchyard as it's much better (this statement might be down to my inner indie snob). Re-issued a few years back as The Glasgow School which added all the early Postcard singles and B-sides. [First added to this chart: 11/23/2013]

I guess I should make one spot in my top 100 available for a live album and this is my favourite as it has everything I look for in a great live recording...it even has a drum solo (cough). Live at Shepperton really captures the raw energy of the live performance and transports you straight to the front row. A Brilliant set recorded with The Damned at the peak of their powers playing everything at one hundred mph. [First added to this chart: 08/21/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.4/100, a mean average of 91.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.9.

An exciting chart - love having so many outliers and how each means something uniquely special to you. If I had been born about 20 years later I could easily imagine this would be my chart! We do have 2 albums in common despite the difference! Glad to see one Aussie & one NZ album in the mix.

Just a gorgeous, personal, vitality-inducing chart. Can't believe it was created seven years ago and I'm only finding it now???

Cool! Started off like a number of charts but ended up having a bunch of lesser known artists which I appreciate. There's many I need to check out from your chart. Especially since I want to get more familiar with the late eighties and early nineties.

Really cool chart and I also like your notes. The personal anecdotes help me to appreciate where you're coming from with this distinctive taste of yours. I really don't know why I never gave Pavement much of a chance; they're quite enjoyable.

Love this chart! Would like to check out some of the few I haven't heard at some stage...and props for Goon Sax and Beach Slang. Not in my faves but I really enjoyed them, and I like seeing some unique choices.
