Top 79 Music Albums of 2014 by

For 2014, i'm tightening my minimum track-average rating from 61.67 to an even 64. The only allowable exceptions are: 1) those with a strong whole-album concept (where the whole is stronger than the sum of the parts), 2) albums JUST under 64-track avg that i believe i'll like more (and subsequently re-rate up) over time, and 3) for sentimental favorites.
I'm including brief synposes of albums here and will expand upon them per album once 2014 is over.

This is country pop. It's a tad cornball at times but there's enough authentic emotion-driven content that drives sincerity to the ears first. I think i was still high on Kacey Musgraves fumes; but regardless, there's some good songwriting on this album with just enough dashes of sincerity and fun (and a little schmaltz, but not much thankfully) to make it an enjoyable country music album. This is my favorite old 97's since "blame it on gravity" made 2008's top 10. It's an alt-country rocker that's a lot of fun as a result of being messed up. A lot of these songs are about drinking (whiskey, malt liquor, whatever), getting laid and simply letting loose, which are subjects that come natural to these guys as these songs are a lot of fun to rock to. i recently listened to Blacknecks "006" reading that it was this awesome, cheeky, tongue-in-cheek techno. Well, where Blacknecks missed the mark for me, Duck Sauce nails that soft spot between toe-tappin' house techno and humorous fun. [First added to this chart: 04/30/2014]

This is fem indie pop I dig. This is more what i wanted the new Lykke Li album to sound like. This is more of what the new Alvvays album couldn't been if the vocals weren't buried in the mix and more emphasis was placed on the hooks. St. Vincent is in clear, top, strange form on her 4th album. All of her musical and stylistic quirks both make her unique and will keep her from ever having a popular, mainstream album. But that's just fine with me, the indie world and St. Vincent. She brings a distorted view of characters in the modern world and it works well, as typified on "birth in reverse" and "digital witness", the two best tracks on her latest, critically-lauded album. This is some good, catchy indie/alternative rock, for all the good and bad that implies. What i hear is a mix of the new, new wavey rock a la maximo park and the indie pop/rock of Miike Snow.
