Here i will list my favorite artists of all-time. This list takes into account an artist's entire catalogue, giving highest marks to quality across quantity. (I will list my fav album by each artist.) This list is subjective not really based on BEA-entered data.

Runners up: the minus 5, fun/the_format, iron & wine, of montreal, sheryl crow, gram parsons, the bee gees. You can probably find a bunch of these artists on the continuation of this chart, "all-time fav artists (subj), #101-200".

The Downward Spiral

Nine Inch Nails

This is an artist i discovered in college but didn't really immerse myself into until just after college. A friend of mine was sick of "the downward spiral" and gave me his copy. I've been a huge fan since. That album's vision and personal s&m qualities are omnipresent and shredding, carrying the vision of "pretty hate machine" to its logical, self-flatulating extreme. "the fragile" carried this vision to a grander, if a bit lengthy, scope. He then struggled for many years to regain focus until recent soundtrack work and "hesitation marks". One more strong album like that and NIN can move up. [First added to this chart: 01/20/2014]

Repeat Offender

Richard Marx

When it comes to 80s pop pap, no mortal ad the string of hits as richard marx. he spoke in terms of silly love songs, but they were very good silly love songs. He carried me from high school into college. He was the first artist i owned two albums of. (Phil collins was 2nd.) I ate it up then and, if i can hear past the cheese, i still eat his songs up now. This Is Happening

LCD Soundsystem

A short career? Certainly. A brilliant career? Definitely. It feels inaccurate to put lcd soundsystem so high, and i might change this ranking eventually (soon?), but those 4 albums, especially the last 2, were awesome. James's swan song, "this is happening", is near-perfect IDM. He is one of the best at what he does. (Or was, since he shut down LCD.) [First added to this chart: 01/20/2014]

Foo Fighters

Grohl's one-man-band debut was just what i needed following the abrupt dissolution of nirvana. That album is a fierce tour-de-force with just enough tenderness displayed in between. While you can point to the foo fighters comparing them to nirvana as evidence behind cobain's sentiment "it's better to burn out then to fade away", the best moments from grohl's first couple albums, including their best song "everlong", rivals nirvana's catalog. Vampire Weekend

Another short but brilliant career to be found in Vampire Weekend. Their Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel influences are well-documented and they picked some pretty good artists to play up to and it shows in their music. Probably my current favorite female artist. Starting in the alt-country vein but entering the pop/rock realm probably thanks to the new p0rn influence, she has slowly traded a traditional blues-country style with some indie-type of eccentricities, solidifying her awesomeness as a music artist. Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground

Bright Eyes

I found Bright Eyes via a CMJ and the song "from a balance beam". That's a fine indie rock album by the way of Conor Oberst and he's had a few in his career including a dip into alt-country (with Emmylou Harris) on "i'm wide awake, it's morning". P.M. Dawn

After Kanye, this is my favorite hip-hop of all-time. P.M. Dawn took a highly-philosophical and spiritual approach to hip-hop featuring nearly-even doses of rap and r&b from their debut through "jesus wept". Cryptic and emotional, P.M. Dawn took the best elements of de la soul and a tribe called quest and expounded atop. [First added to this chart: 01/20/2014]

Pixies

The Pixies took indie-alt-rock into quite a chaotic and relatable place. Most of their best songs are understatedly rocking and some of their ballads are pretty special too, especially the darkly haunting "where is my mind?". I thank Nirvana for exposing me to them. Van Halen

The breadth of 80s hair metal owes its existence to Van Halen's debut album. From the precise, guitar histronics to the showboatsmanship of the lead singer to the synthesizers that helped propel 1984 and it's top single "jump" to the top of the charts, Van Halen melded hard rock with pretty boy style like no other in the 80s. They were very good under David Lee Roth, but their albums were hit-and-miss track-for-track under Sammy Hagar. [First added to this chart: 01/20/2014]

Nice concept. There's a humorous typo on Nine Inch Nails. I think you mean self-flagellating, not self-flatulating.
