[March 14th, 2023 Update] I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with this chart. Hell, I just updated it and I'm still not happy with it. There's just so many albums on the edge that can teeter in or fall out. I will always be updating. Maybe one day I will do the 1 artist rule, but for right now, the only significant rule is no compilations featuring entire albums. Using RYM genres with some of my own additions. I'll probably end up overhauling this in a few months anyways...

This gets harder and harder with the more time that passes and listens I accumulate.

As always, continuously tweaking.

Any questions?

Neo-psychedelia, dream pop

This is the best live album ever made. This was Fishman's last ever performance recorded in its entirety. You can hear the sincerity in their musicianship as they play some of their best tracks for the last time, including their swansong "Long Season" in its entire 44 minute duration.

As you can see from the band name and the live album title, English is not the primary language here. But that does not take away from the enjoyment this album brings. The instrumentation is so vibrant and colorful and the singing is so passionate; it's all you need off a record. Admittedly, I was dismissive of this album when I came across it a few years ago because I figure the language barrier would prevent me from fully enjoying it, but boy was I wrong. My first listen left me floored. I never felt so impacted by an initial listen since To Pimp A Butterfly or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy came out years ago, those being the only other two albums I gave a perfect score to on *first* listen. I'm really picky with handing out perfect scores, so just take my word for it and go listen to this album yourself.

Experimental rock, post-rock

The Seer is another album I've always had a difficult time writing about because it's not the easiest album to digest on first listen. The same goes for this band's entire discography, especially their no wave albums from the 80s. It's really difficult to pin down exactly what this album sounds like because the experimental rock genre tag really does not do it any justice. This album is dark, but not in a dark ambient or black metal horrifying way. It's like a dark renaissance painting, where the atmosphere is definitely nocturnal, but it's beautiful at the same time. It's a long album that has its chaotic moments, but it's also impressively cohesive. This album was a challenging listen my first time around, but ultimately it taught me the necessary patience needed to fully enjoy avant-garde records. It certainly is an experience; an experience you need to set aside 2 hours of your day to fully immerse yourself into this piece of art.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.3/100, a mean average of 89.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 13.7.

I could've sworn I'd commented another time this was Chart of the Day, but this is really a wonderful chart. Not all albums or genres I love, but every single album here is masterfully crafted and excels at what the artists sets out to do. I've taken some recs from here in the past, and as you continue to update, I think I'll continue to do so (Technodelic is the only one of the new additions that I haven't heard yet, excited to try that one out). I also appreciate the genre descriptors, that's a huge help in deciding whether it's of interest to me or not

Great chart! I love the diversity and the fact that it is mostly comprised of albums with that unique quality to them. I'll be sure to check out those which are new for me.
