[March 14th, 2023 Update] I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with this chart. Hell, I just updated it and I'm still not happy with it. There's just so many albums on the edge that can teeter in or fall out. I will always be updating. Maybe one day I will do the 1 artist rule, but for right now, the only significant rule is no compilations featuring entire albums. Using RYM genres with some of my own additions. I'll probably end up overhauling this in a few months anyways...
This gets harder and harder with the more time that passes and listens I accumulate.
As always, continuously tweaking.

West coast conscious hip-hop, maximalist hip-hop
This album is probably to most difficult for me to discuss because not only is it dense musically, but it focuses on experiences that I will never understand. I am not a black man, therefore I will never fully understand the prejudices black people face. I will never pretend to understand; I just know from a third person perspective. Therefore, I'm kind of hesitant to talk about it because I know I will be missing a lot of the big picture. But that kind of explains my fascination with To Pimp A Butterfly. It offers a snapshot of heightened social tensions circa 2014-15 from a perspective I will never experience. Kendrick lays out the American black experience in such a relentless, passionate, and conscious fashion that you can't help but focus in on the 79 minutes that album commits you to.
2015 saw an increase of trap in the mainstream, but the beats on here are not trap. They are heavily influenced from genres that have historically black origins (jazz, blues, funk, R&B, hip-hop) and crafted in a modern light to make it sound endlessly refreshing. Kendrick's most passionate vocal performances are on here. The track "u" features Kendrick delivery a role-playing verse while sobbing. "Hood Politics" features a young Kendrick with a spiteful flow. The most visceral track on here "The Blacker the Berry" has moments where Kendrick is practically screaming passionately over a gritty boom-bap-styled beat; it's unquestionably my favorite track on here. And the closing track Mortal Man has a great "interview" between Kendrick and Tupac where the producers splice together old Tupac interview clips that roll so seamlessly you'd think he never got killed. It's such an exciting album that it rightly deserves to be a top 10 album on Rate Your Music.
This album is more than a masterpiece in music. It's a historical landmark. No review will ever do it justice. I'll never be able fully understand the experiences Kendrick tries to convey, but I can forever appreciate his art and message. [First added to this chart: 03/16/2015]

I could've sworn I'd commented another time this was Chart of the Day, but this is really a wonderful chart. Not all albums or genres I love, but every single album here is masterfully crafted and excels at what the artists sets out to do. I've taken some recs from here in the past, and as you continue to update, I think I'll continue to do so (Technodelic is the only one of the new additions that I haven't heard yet, excited to try that one out). I also appreciate the genre descriptors, that's a huge help in deciding whether it's of interest to me or not
