SyroUnited Kingdom Aphex Twin
Electronic/braindance

It's weird for me that this is considered accessible, because it's so far removed from the repetitiveness of the most beloved stuff like SAW 85-92 or Alberto Balsalm. It doesn't have the flash of all the metasynth stuff on Windowlicker so a lot of people were like "wtf why doesn't this sound like the future". It's the furthest step away from the "using drum repetitions to create the impression of pitch" drill n bass stuff of the late 90's. And the aesthetics of it all are more like a distillation of the one pursued by the now defunct Rephlex Records. But it makes me so glad that in spite of all that, it still connects with people. Because these compositions are just so detailed, bustling with activity. But there is a light touch to everything, even on the high bpm tracks, it always feels like there is space for every element to move around and decide to be something else (and that is often taken advantage of). I've never heard anything that geeks out this hard without weighing down the ears any.

Slipping ControlUnited States Ben Vida
Experimental/electronic

This album is about intent. It starts as a book of weird abstract poetry. It gets read by some people (one of them is tyondai braxton, of battles fame). That (usually) gets fed into crazy modular synthesizer things and triggers all sorts of insanity. So there's the multi-layered dissolution of specific artistic intent, which tries to assert it's hold again through the intermediary machines. It's incredible.

QuixotismAustralia Oren Ambarchi
Ambient drone/beat

So here's a cool one. Sorta experimental/I guess drone? That seems so wrong though, because there's this really strong pulse and emphasis on percussion, but it's like this constant thing that builds up and mutates a little but is always just *there*, constantly going while Ambarchi's guitar and contributions from all sorts of folks (Jim O'Rourke, the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, and Eyvind Kang among others) help to carefully fill in the space. So I don't really know how to categorize that one. It's really great though.

Dan'l BooneUnited States Dan'l Boone
Electronic rock/

Royal Trux was one of those bands that I kept hearing about but it wasn't until I saw how well regarded they were with people here (particularly Twin Infinitives) that I decided to check them out. And I haven't gone much deeper than that album for Royal Trux, but I did notice that Neil Hagerty did this project in 2014 with Alex Moskos (aka Drainolith) and Nate Young from Wolf Eyes and someone named Charles Ballas who I'm unfamiliar with. And while it's certainly different, it does seem to carry the heavily damaged rock music spirit of Twin Infinitives, and I'd recommend it for anyone who jams that. Things are a bit cleaner here, and there's a bit more space in how everything is arranged. But it still does that thing where it's sort of technically rock music if you squint at it but the structures are all warped with the world at the verge of tearing at the seams. Except a lot of it is also somewhat muted so sometimes it's simultaneously peaceful and also perpetually falling apart. Some of the most adventurous music I've heard from this decade that uses guitars, don't skip this one.

Whole StoriesUnited States Vanessa Rossetto
Experimental/musique concrete

This ones weird. Sort of got a sound collage vibe, quite a few hard cuts into different field recordings, with all sorts of processing and layered editing trickery going on that I can't quite figure out but totally makes me happy. It's basically music made out of the sounds of public space (although I should note, for the second half of this album that environment is a casino, so things get really musical and if you're looking for an easy entry point into this sort of music, that's absolutely a great one to go for). One of the sounds in the first half is actually Rossetto explaining the process to someone while out and about gathering materials. It is very well composed, and unusually accessible for this sort of thing. Some of this sort of stuff I find difficult to engage with, but this keeps things moving nicely and I am just completely on board.

Toxic CosmopolitanismFrance Kassel Jaeger
Experimental/electronic

This came out early in the year, like around March, but it hadn't really fully clicked with me until just recently. The album is titled Toxic Cosmopolitanism because it's all derived from samples recorded around the world, taken from various cultures and then processed to the point where maybe they still have an otherness to communicate, but their specific origins seem pretty hard to read. I don't know whether this is such a "bad thing", but it's really made me think. Regardless of all of that though, this is just some fantastic music. The first track is a very low key sound adventure, a long epic composition that really goes places, but for the most part stays on the quieter side of things. The next few tracks make up the second half, each one a part of a suite that have a bit more consistency in what they sound like from beginning to end, but are all still quite lovely deconstructions of similar material to the title track. If you want something on the ambient/spacier side of things, but that still has really engaging structure and relative clarity to the sounds and things (and a few slightly more difficult timbres in the mix than "ambient" might suggest, so that it's not just all pretty, it's got some edge to it), I think you might want to check it out. It might take 9 months to really click for you too, but if it does you've got a good time waiting for you.

Alas Rattoisaa VirtaaFinland Kemialliset Ystävät
Electronic rock/

The last Kemialliset Ystavat album was all sorts of really wild untethered bonkers song things, and was really incredible. This one focuses down a bit, incorporating a lot of electronic percussion type of stuff. There's still some cool guitar stuff and everything is still quite psychedelic, but things are a bit sharper and easier to jibe with. Although I really think the spaciness of the last album was a really special quality that I do prefer, this is still a fantastic collection of weirdo psychedelic electronic rock type jams. The albums above this can maybe get a bit serious, if you just wanna have a good time with some far out sounds, check this one out.

Miseri LaresItaly Valerio Tricoli
Experimental/noise

Here's just a lovely assemblage of noises. Very dynamic, and just perfectly composed. Some full on narratives of pure sound right here, every moment feels completely earned thru the patience on display in the construction. There's drones and things, but the form is never hidden behind them. Just a totally brilliant, really fresh feeling sound adventure right here, and it speaks to the ridiculous glut of good music this year that I've only got this at #8.

Black To CommGermany Black To Comm
Ambient/not ambient

I first learned about this artist from a 2012 release called EARTH, that was really weird, dry, and had vocals and stuff. I learned later that it was a bit of an anomaly in his discography, and then jammed out on some of their older wetter dronier stuff. And it was all good, but holy wow this album takes it to such a wonderful place. It's crazy long, 82 minutes, and mixes it up in the tracklist with some songs going full on wash drone, and some others keeping it a bit clearer with the form, preventing the whole thing from sounding too samey. I just think it's some really beautiful stuff and if you're looking for some really great ambient/not ambient, this is something you need to hear.

Great, intimidating chart as always, I've been listening to Black to Comm a lot recently and even though it wasn't a direct rec, thanks infinity, it's absolutely beguiling
