101-200, The Waiting Room (Or The Obligatory Next Ton) of Dread by Jimmy Dread

Yep, I've caved in to doing a chart with another 100 LPs that would otherwise be in the all-time 100 were it not for the fact that there's 100 albums better. Not that there's much wrong with any of these picks - they're all zingers (and on any given day one of the first 50 in this list could easily sneak into the 100 when one of the incumbents has their back turned). Be amazed as some albums that you're likely sick to death of co-exist with obscure shit from Brazil or Jamaica. Enjoy it whilst it lasts, as being the pinickity git I am I'll probably delete this chart in a fit of rage when my son decides to run off with my DAC again. Out of all the the charts of mine on here, this is probably the most likely to fluctuate, and will more likely reflect my current listening habits than even my overall 100 (of which a few of these LPs will doubtlessly make in due time). Comments to follow where there are none when I can be arsed, plunder it for recs all you like... Jimmy, May 2021

PICK - Lady Fair; FIRST HEARD: via Eilir. One of the best things about finding a friend who shares similar music taste to you is that you end up bouncing recs off one another to such an extent that your tastes end up blurring and then falling out with one another because you both wanted the same record and there was only one copy available. Luckily this didn't happen here with what remains to me Euros Childs and co's finest half-hour. A far cry from the psychedelia Cymraeg that was Bwyd Time and Barafundle, this is 8 tracks of pure folk-tinged acoustica to sing round a roaring campfire in Pembrokeshire. Or to listen to on your mate's record player in Cardiff, which after finding it on eBay for him (it was the only Gorky's LP he was missing on vinyl) I am awaiting an invite from my good Welsh bud to do. PICK - Come Saturday; FIRST HEARD: at work (thanks to Will). Although they've been going for years, Slumberland is fast becoming the essential twee-pop record label of the 21st century, and this is their finest hour. Great live - in fact the only band I've ever seen alone as my gig buddy Anna was ill the day they played the Lexington. There's no substitute for youth, guitars and a cute keyboard player. PICK - Decent Days and Nights; FIRST HEARD: Collectors Records, Guildford c.2004. Bought this on promo which instantly made it feel all-the-more special, got me into a band (saw an ad in same shop advertising for bassist with Futureheads fixation - shame they turned out to be toss) and still gives me a spring in my step whenever I hear it. PICK - You! Me! Dancing!; FIRST HEARD - cannae remember. I had the chance to see the Los Camps! in Reading many moons ago but for some reason chose not to go. Then once my gig buddy Anna asked if I fancied seeing them in London and as I was on holiday at the time I had to back out of that too. Suffice it to say that whilst fate has so far conspired against me to check them out in the flesh, if I'd gone on either occasion I'd probably have spent far less than the £40 I had to part with to own this LP on vinyl. Shouty Welsh indie-pop (the best kind, in all honesty) par excellance. [First added to this chart: 04/04/2015]

PICK - Come On! Feel The Illinoise; FIRST HEARD: via Pitchfork. I often thought it would be a good idea to pen an album about every English county. "Now That's What I Call Rutland" unfortunately never saw the light of day. [First added to this chart: 08/09/2014]

PICK - Ageing Had Never Been His Friend; FIRST HEARD: Rough Trade indie-pop compy. Sounding like a 21st Century X-Ray Spex and straight outta Stockholm, Love Is All make a hell of an indie-pop racket, horns and all. This album is made all-the-more essential as pretty much everything they did after it was total guff - maybe they OD'd on Ryvita. Shame 'cos if they'd continued in this vein they could have taken over the world and not just Scandinavia. [First added to this chart: 06/26/2015]

PICK - Turning Blue; FIRST HEARD: Bloghopping. Not an ounce of fat here - garage anthems on a Flying V played to within an inch of their existence, with strings sounding like they could snap to bits at any moment. The cover of the Adverts' "We Who Wait" is awesome - he sounds a dead ringer for TV Smith. Coincidentally I went for a run the other day for the first time ever (mid-life crisis health-kick). This was the soundtrack. RIP Jay... :( [First added to this chart: 03/17/2018]
