Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Nice stuff! I see lots of stuff that I've been meaning to get around to on here, especially 80's stuff like Peter Gabriel and the Talking Heads
A bit safe here but lots of fave records too
Great list and i love almost all of these albums. However, the best thing I ever did as a listener was to branch out to other genres besides rock (Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, Electronica). Give them a try!
Great to see Elvis Costello featured a bunch here.

Holy crap I like your chart! 80s new wave does not get the love it deserves from many on this site so kudos for that alone, but your choices... well they were choice. Extra points for the Numan. I haven't heard of the FutureHeads, but will definitely be looking into them now.
