You BEAutiful People! Top Recs From Other Members by Jimmy Dread

i doubt I would have discovered any of these wonderful records without BEA. Bless up.

I get some lovely comments every now and then from people who have ended up discovering, listening to and loving a record I've featured, mentioned or name-dropped their way. Well, it's time to repay the kudos. Below is a list of albums discovered thanks to members on this site (naturally in order of preference), along with those amazing souls who put me in touch with it in the first place.

It's been a little dry for updates of late as I've been off on my own musical voyage away from the good ship BEA (plus plug.dj - previously the best source of finding out about some of these - seems to have bitten the dust), but since this chart was conceived and first compiled I've managed to pick up about 80-85 of these to expand the record collection. So thanks all for making my wallet a little lighter over the years, and here's to the next discovery (whenever that may be).... Jimmy, January 2021

Via Norman Bates. One of the many discoveries I've made through stalking Norm's contributions to the 'What Album Are You Listening To' thread, and whilst I was aware of Willie before Norm dropped this bomb (mainly through his Blaxplotation era stuff - 'Brothers Gonna Work It Out', etc) this delicious slice of sumptuous soul had totally passed me by previously. Via Norman Bates. If you ever get stuck for an instant rec, plug.dj is a pretty decent place to go, especially when the likes of Norm, Satie, /0, Mec, Brandon and Lethal all turn up. This slice of gospel-funk merriment was one of Norm's drops on what became an impromptu Saturday funk hour. [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

Via SingingPeasant96. Whilst checking out rival twee charts on BEA I stumbled upon SP96's list and instantly gravitated to this album, which it turns out was made by a band from the Isle of Wight (which is ironically where I've been today - on the hovercraft, no less - for work). Beautifully shambolic twee pop that sounds like it was recorded on a knackered tape player. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Via Mancsoulsister. MSS she'll always be to me, with her love of Lux Interior and other such psychobilly gubbins. Picked up this LP on the cheap purely as she's always banged on about how much she's loved the Cramps. I can see the appeal. [First added to this chart: 01/19/2016]

Via Skinny. Going to have to swallow my pride in a big way here because whereas I've initially dismissed this as "Jean Michel Jarre for hipsters" every time I hear it I grow to appreciate it, and dare I say like it even more. [First added to this chart: 04/28/2019]

Via Hayden. Bit of an odd one this. I'd heard Exuma's first LP a couple of times and didn't think anything of it at all. It wasn't until a thread I started where I thought I'd be the BEA equivalent of a good Samaritan/swap meet coordinator, and the resulting sending of a copy of this album to Hayden in the post, that I started to listen to it again. And you know what? It's starting to grow on me, especially the title track (which is f'ing great). I'm waiting for the karma to pay me back... [First added to this chart: 07/02/2015]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.8/100, a mean average of 96.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 97.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

Not sure if you were the first to come up with this idea but it doesn't matter; this chart is everything I love about the online music community summed up in 100 albums.

A very nice surprise seeing your chart! You've given me lots of new artists to hear. Thank you for that. It's a great idea, as well, making a chart celebrating the friends on BEA that exposed you to the new music. Saved your chart as a Fave.
