You BEAutiful People! Top Recs From Other Members by Jimmy Dread

i doubt I would have discovered any of these wonderful records without BEA. Bless up.

I get some lovely comments every now and then from people who have ended up discovering, listening to and loving a record I've featured, mentioned or name-dropped their way. Well, it's time to repay the kudos. Below is a list of albums discovered thanks to members on this site (naturally in order of preference), along with those amazing souls who put me in touch with it in the first place.

It's been a little dry for updates of late as I've been off on my own musical voyage away from the good ship BEA (plus plug.dj - previously the best source of finding out about some of these - seems to have bitten the dust), but since this chart was conceived and first compiled I've managed to pick up about 80-85 of these to expand the record collection. So thanks all for making my wallet a little lighter over the years, and here's to the next discovery (whenever that may be).... Jimmy, January 2021

Via Antonio-Pedro. Prize time. You can claim this spot should you so wish if you tell me that you were the BEAutiful soul who said they were 'listening to this right now' in that thread that we all post pictures of record covers in. Whoever you are... ta muchly. (Antonio thinks it was him. That'll do for me - he's a lovely lad) [First added to this chart: 07/24/2016]

Via Secretdad/Tap. Instant love when dropped in plug by Alex a while back. Given the cover that's hardly a surprise (it just OOZES class, doesn't it?!). [First added to this chart: 07/02/2015]

Via Pa. As a self-confessed Francophile there's a few records in this list that have come as a direct result of Norm spinning a track or two in Plug/dubtrack. Well, on this occasion it was an Italian with a soul of pure gold to play the wonderful 'Saperlipopette' that piqued my interest enough to make me rush off and download this compy at the earliest opportunity. Via dividesbyzero. Classic Chicago/Detroit house-flavoured dance anthems made in the last decade. This is by far and away the best house album (sod the fact it's a compy) I've heard since I was a student (clue - an age ago), and even better than Etienne De Crecy's Super Discount. Yes, it's that good - and dropped one night during a plug.DJ dance session that Mec tried to hijack by playing some laid-back shit made by a man with a beard that Kiki was scared of. And as for DAT BASS... [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

Via JoyofDivision. I've often seen this ride high in JoD's chart as thought I'd take a punt to see what it was like. Dub techno has never really been my bag - I've always preferred the parts instead of the sum - but driving along dark roads lit by blinkering streetlights now the clocks are due to go back any day means this LP is going to get plenty of airtime. Just as well - it's lush. [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

Via Repoman/Tilly. Bless Repo, one of the nicest guys you're ever likely to bump into on an internet forum and with a solid taste in music to match (as well as a mutual adoration of all things SST). He posted this record in response to a forum post I'd made, to which I was extremely grateful. It's ace. [First added to this chart: 01/19/2016]

Via Applerill. I'd wager that I probably have very little in common with Charlie, and more often than not I shake my head in total disagreement with most of the stuff he comes out with. Still, everyone deserves to be BEAutiful, and this Footwork masterpiece (which I will forever kick myself for not getting when I saw it at a car boot sale for £4) is a corker. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.8/100, a mean average of 96.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 97.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

Not sure if you were the first to come up with this idea but it doesn't matter; this chart is everything I love about the online music community summed up in 100 albums.

A very nice surprise seeing your chart! You've given me lots of new artists to hear. Thank you for that. It's a great idea, as well, making a chart celebrating the friends on BEA that exposed you to the new music. Saved your chart as a Fave.
