You BEAutiful People! Top Recs From Other Members by Jimmy Dread

i doubt I would have discovered any of these wonderful records without BEA. Bless up.

I get some lovely comments every now and then from people who have ended up discovering, listening to and loving a record I've featured, mentioned or name-dropped their way. Well, it's time to repay the kudos. Below is a list of albums discovered thanks to members on this site (naturally in order of preference), along with those amazing souls who put me in touch with it in the first place.

It's been a little dry for updates of late as I've been off on my own musical voyage away from the good ship BEA (plus plug.dj - previously the best source of finding out about some of these - seems to have bitten the dust), but since this chart was conceived and first compiled I've managed to pick up about 80-85 of these to expand the record collection. So thanks all for making my wallet a little lighter over the years, and here's to the next discovery (whenever that may be).... Jimmy, January 2021

TOP 100! Via Brun027. Another stellar rec from meu bom amigo. Strangely enough I actually had Tinindo Tricando on a cracking Soul Jazz MPB compilation, but never thought to check out the album in full (although I did with Jaime & Nair, which I also love). A gorgeous record that sits nicely next to Jorge Ben on my virtual record rack. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

TOP 100! Via 'Mindmovie' (or whatever name Borve's going by these days). This was on one of those threads where you recommend an album and someone picks one from your chart, etc. etc. Anyway, don't know why I picked this from MM's chart, but so glad I did. Cosmic Gallic psych par excellance - and now firmly established in my All-Time 100. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Via Brun027. Bruno's one-time overall No.1 album contains, in it's opening track, the song which my iTunes is telling me I've listened to more than any other. I've been going through a pretty lengthy MPB phase of late, and his chart is a constant treasure trove of recs. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Via Meccalecca. I'm sure I'd spotted this album in a P4k review a while back (assume it's been re-issued), but had never given it a listen until Mr. Leather dropped Blue Crystal Fire in plug one night. A total revelation which I can't believe had passed me by for so long. Now holds extra resonance after listening to it en route to the hospice just before my Mum passed away. Hauntingly beautiful. Via Meccalecca. Seeing as I was Jonny's co-captain for the (still at time of writing yet to conclude) BYT it was surprising how many LPs he picked that I'd never heard of. Such as this, mutant French hi-NRG disco which after hearing for the first time I couldn't get out of my head. Picked it up on vinyl eventually at Devon's coolest record shop, Drift in Totnes. Via Norman Bates. If you ever get stuck for an instant rec, plug.dj is a pretty decent place to go, especially when the likes of Norm, Satie, /0, Mec, Brandon and Lethal all turn up. This slice of gospel-funk merriment was one of Norm's drops on what became an impromptu Saturday funk hour. [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

Via Hayden. Bit of an odd one this. I'd heard Exuma's first LP a couple of times and didn't think anything of it at all. It wasn't until a thread I started where I thought I'd be the BEA equivalent of a good Samaritan/swap meet coordinator, and the resulting sending of a copy of this album to Hayden in the post, that I started to listen to it again. And you know what? It's starting to grow on me, especially the title track (which is f'ing great). I'm waiting for the karma to pay me back... [First added to this chart: 07/02/2015]

Via Norman Bates. Mon funk soul frère et moi often have the predilection to educate one another with 70s grooves, and this slice of UK funk (with a smattering of Rasta thrown in, as well as a track that De La Soul sampled) just goes to show that BEA's version of the Entente Cordiale is as strong as ever. Formidable! [First added to this chart: 02/28/2015]

Via Norman Bates. More folk from Norm, who's welcome to pop over to England whenever he feels like and join me to form a travelling folk band playing all the pubs and inns in the West Country until we get booed off stage (unlikely). [First added to this chart: 01/19/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.8/100, a mean average of 96.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 97.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

Not sure if you were the first to come up with this idea but it doesn't matter; this chart is everything I love about the online music community summed up in 100 albums.

A very nice surprise seeing your chart! You've given me lots of new artists to hear. Thank you for that. It's a great idea, as well, making a chart celebrating the friends on BEA that exposed you to the new music. Saved your chart as a Fave.
