I think personal charts always are feelings,combined with nostalgic connections to your youth and childhood favourites melted together with lifeexperiences and strong impressions from the past. I can not point at classic albums from the near past, because defining classics takes time! A great example is Nick Drake!
Some 25 years passed before his genius was rediscovered! I hope there are still several other artists out there to be appreciated and yet are to be discovered from the hidden past!

A sensation when it appeared in 97 and still an influential force inspiring plenty of artists today. Maybe a little overrated, but this is a masterpiece ...that is a fact. The dark side of the moon for the 90's generation, Thom Yorke's vocals and Johnny Greenwood's guitar are dynemite producing some of the most adventerous sounds and compositions before the millennium. Paranoid Android is an enigmatic piece of work, along with Subterranean homesick alien, Lucky, Karma Police, No surprises etc. etc. A stunning record!

Nirvana started the second punkphase: Grunge. Seattle was the breeding ground and lots of other essential groups from the same place emerged. This album was the most commercial sound they could offer, inspired by The Pixies, but Kurt Cobain surely created something magic by himself.
Powerful and melodic songs along with outragious liveperformances, built them a big fanbase. Sadly it was over within two years was gone. This happen to be their landmarkalbum for the eternity.

Stunning and effortless, the most satisfying album from a legend who died way too early. I put it in this position between two of Radiohead's albums because I think "It's good to be king" is kind of a blueprint for the track Lucky on Ok Computer ?! The low key quality of many of the tracks is typical for the production of Rick Rubin. Many memorable songs, great lyrics throughout the whole album. This is Petty peaking in his career!

An excellent prognosis for the next album to come, The Bends is almost equally good. Fake plastic tree, High and dry, Nice dream, and the rest of the tracks are brilliant too!

The australian lunatic's most accessible album, inspired by the relationship with Polly Harvey at the time? Sparse and minimalistic, but with an emotional impact he never had shown before, this album really is impressive listening. His philosophic reflections and thoughts lyrically, give a new dimension to his manyfacetted musical landscape.

Neil Finn's gift is composing superb songs with melodic touch not unlike Lennon/McCartney. I love this group when they harmonise like The Everly Brothers! When Neil and his brother Tim duets on tracks like "Weather with you", it sparkles between them! Pop Music from heaven with a bit of melancholia!

I did think they imitated The Byrds a lot in the start, but on this album they have grown into maturity and defining their own style and finesse. Peaking with a lot of beautiful crafted songs like Drive, Man on the moon, Everybody hurts, Nightswimming etc etc. A very even and relaxing record and one of the best from the ninetees!

I respect your comment that "defining classics takes time," but I don't find my favorite albums are always classics. And to take that a step further, sometimes I'm just worn out on the classics. I wish there was more outisde of the 60s and 70s, but regardless nice chart with the best descriptions I've read in a while.

Even if the music is not generally my cup of tea, the care you've taken in writing for each of these albums is astonishing and impressive. That said, I don't think I agree with your statement: "I can not point at classic albums from the near past, because defining classics takes time!" - this shouldn't be a list of albums you 'think' are classics, these are just your favourite albums!! The whole idea of 'classics' is a subjective construction anyway, I fear that some underground picks might miss your radar because of this standardisation of the rock canon. Would be nice to see some more of your fringe tastes come through!!
