There is simply no way this could NOT be my number one album. I was lucky enough to have three older brothers who had great taste in music. I first heard this album when I was 7 years old, and from the first listen was totally captivated by its sound. I would listen to it extremely loud when no-one else was at home. I got a peverse thrill in thinking it was unsettling the neighbours. A masterpiece. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2014]

This guy and Nick Drake were introduced to the older generation of guitarists in the town I live in South Africa in the early 70's, and had a huge influence on many of them, and later on me too. A great, hugely under-rated album, dark, woozy and brooding, with fantastic double-bass by Danny Thompson. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2014]

By far my favourite Dylan album. Can't stand the pronounced nasal whine on all his earlier stuff. Amazing what a decade or two of smoking did for both his and Joni's voices. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2014]

I wish the production on this album had been more like that of Five Leaves. I prefer the songs on here to Five Leaves, but it's all a bit over-produced. Should have been just him and John Cale. Just listen to how Cale elevated Northern Sky from a lovely little song into something truly marvelous. I really wore the grooves on that track of my LP out! [First added to this chart: 12/06/2014]

Good Lord! This was the biggest shock for me on this site: seeing how underrated and obscure this musician/poet is. For so many of my friends here in South Africa this guy was huge. Bigger than Bob Marley.

Here's a story to demonstrate just how much he meant to so many White lefties in SA:

My friend Marc was conscripted into the South African army in the late 80s (as were all of us), but like so many, was deeply disturbed by what was expected of him. After a few months they sent him to a military hospital for a few months for 'psychiatric evaluation'.

The only thing that kept him sane in this maddest of mad corners of 1980s SA was the music of Rodriguez and LKJ.

Many years later, he had the opportunity to see LKJ perform in Grahamstown, a small university town in South Africa. Afterwards he burst into the dressing room and on seeing his hero face to face blurted out: "LKJ!!! You saved my fucken life!!!"

To which LKJ calmly replied: "Dat's very cool mon but Ahm busy doin a TV interview here."

Marc hadn't noticed a small film crew set up on the other side of the room!

Great story. This guy was huge here.

Cale has always been much biggerin the Antipodian world (Australia New Zealand South Africa) than in The States. Show me another singer/songwriter/guitarist with a debut album as gently bewitching and consumate as this, please. [First added to this chart: 12/06/2014]

A favourite, like the movie said, for most white Saffies. But really NOT the soundtrack of the anti-apartheid movement. Most black South Africans had never heard of this guy. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2014]

While largely generic, there's a lot here, even in your top 10, that is surprising and interesting. Will be cool to see where it goes!
