Axl Rose is a bad boy with a beautiful heart. How else do you sing a song with sex noises in it and then END with "All I ever wanted was to show you I care"? Izzy Stradlin's rumble-shuffle matches perfectly with Slash's punk abrasiveness, and Axl adds some trademark epic flourishes to the songs to make them larger than life. Haunted and lovely. Waits recycles the sounds of old America in the least "roots rock" way possible. I also weirdly think it's about growing up, the various "bogeymen" you encounter as you traverse. Maybe it's about alcoholism too, which is a contradiction. Whatever it is, it's brilliant. [First added to this chart: 03/18/2017]

I don't intend to like this album so much. But I dare say this is underrated. Really, really good. A kaleidescope of the human personality. A sound that is STILL the primary basis for contemporary R&B. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Ian Anderson is one of the most underrated writers in the history of rock music. Not only was he a genius with song structure but he captured the human need and love of the pastoral- bringing dignified standards of 19th century classical music (not to mention English folk song) to rock music. If businessmen making deals in smokey rooms also played rock music, this is what they would play. The city arising, and Latinos (re)claiming their space in it, I also hear. Long live the "real" San Francisco! [First added to this chart: 08/02/2015]

Relaxed folk music without being pretentious, or too rustic, or too twee. The harmonies are impeccable- all of them. And the mix and match of personalities is perfect- from Crosby's nautical groove, to Stills's relaxed folk, to Nash's cuteness and tenderness. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Raw, fast, and just a little bit nerdy. Proves heavy metal was borne of bebop and Bach-obsessed garage rockers. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Some of the most sensitive, darkest, not to mention sexiest music ever made, that richly contemplates what really makes us feel content and "whole" and what makes us feel lost and confused. Sometimes, I wish that social scientists would just shut up and listen to this (not to mention more people on this site!) [First added to this chart: 04/24/2015]

I don't think anybody had more fun recording an album than this guy. Also everything is so sweet! The cover says it all: each song is a rose offered to the listener to relax and love life's little moments. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Finding yourself lost in a sea of beautiful and tender emotions, this preserves in sonic form the most tender moments of our lives, and I love the name of the album: "loveless." Because acknowledging what we don't feel at the present means that there's hope that one day we will feel it again. Genius. [First added to this chart: 01/14/2015]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 89.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

I really like to see some love for Hendrix, he seems to be a bit overlooked on this site... but well, that includes me actually.

I love how you aren't entirely skewed towards old or new music on this chart, I find that fairly rare on this site

So much brilliant effort put into this chart!! Your notes are extensive and personal (especially those for Illinois!), and though looking at the first couple of picks I got worried that I'd find things a little too classic-rock orientated, the smattering of jazz and hip hop provided a refreshing change from the rest of your picks. Well done!

Quadrophenia rules! So does Superunknown. Lots of good choices here. Glad to see someone else appreciates There is Nothing Left to Lose.
