Superunknown was a remarkable step forward for an already badass rock group. The musicians reach into your consciousness and shatter its foundations. There's really nothing like Cornell's incredibly nuanced singing or Thayil's unpredictable and liberating solos. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

The best indie album ever made. A fondness for knick-knacks of the past, old attic history collections, and innocent love pervades alongside a fear of the great beyond. Musically, Stevens mixes Neil Young and Phillip Glass to great consequence. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

A highly confessional record, Grohl furiously indicts while asking for strength and support from the (rightfully?) unsympathetic crowd. The music is filled with angst and distortion but there's also the sheen of the chance to bounce back and start anew. Probably no other album makes you feel more alive. In this album Miles switched from being a great orchestrator to being a sound artist. And here is a much more coherent, if less shocking, work than "Bitches Brew", that tastefully captures the mind's zen when at work. [First added to this chart: 01/14/2015]

Released in 1963, this couldn't sound less like an album from that year, but rather almost seemed to encompass the whole of historic American music- AND the innovators of its future decades. Sometimes life is like standing at a railway station, and civiliziation is coming full steam ahead towards you- and you're thinking about a lost love on at one end of the line but the train is headed full speed the other way. Emotionally honest, dreamy and beautiful, like a fairy tale. For whatever reason, this is my favorite coming-of-age album, even though I'm not sure if anybody other than me calls it that! Don't overlook "Ignoreland"- boy do those lyrics ring true. [First added to this chart: 03/06/2015]

What's sad about hip hop is how relatively fewartists fully explore its artistic possibilities. This album is a hallmark of the possibilities of hip hop to express inner strife, racial conflict, love, and the power to endure. Kanye masters beats of all styles, from baroque pop to disco to soul. While lyrically it might sound like any other "hippie" album, I sense genuine concern and elegant pleading beneath the sometimes superficial sense of the time. This album flows together very well and is best listened to in the open countryside. Spectral. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Side 1 is Dylan giving a "f**k you" to everyone who's got him down, and with the highly unexpected delivery of electric blues. Side 2 is a milestone of the literary genre, where surrealistic and evocative poetry is delivered through flexible folk music patterns (not to mention the generational zeitgeist). Seriously, how does one record do that? [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 89.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

I really like to see some love for Hendrix, he seems to be a bit overlooked on this site... but well, that includes me actually.

I love how you aren't entirely skewed towards old or new music on this chart, I find that fairly rare on this site

So much brilliant effort put into this chart!! Your notes are extensive and personal (especially those for Illinois!), and though looking at the first couple of picks I got worried that I'd find things a little too classic-rock orientated, the smattering of jazz and hip hop provided a refreshing change from the rest of your picks. Well done!

I really wish I could give this chart a 150/100 after seeing you say Stranger Things Have Happened is the highlight of Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace.

Quadrophenia rules! So does Superunknown. Lots of good choices here. Glad to see someone else appreciates There is Nothing Left to Lose.
