From the 70s until the mid 00s rock music dominated the airwaves. In some ways, every band was paying tribute to this incredible album. Zeppelin perfected the drifting, rambling blues rock of an earlier era to encompass the volatility and excitement of the modernist age. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Some of the most organic music ever written. Each instrument is carefully layered as part of an overall texture that waxes and wanes according to the mood of the moment. This is not to mention Van Morrison's beautiful, soulful singing. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

I think "1983" may be my favorite song of all time, which props this one up quite a bit. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

An opera about the loss of innocence at the height of the riff-based song structure and choreographed with incredibly delicate sound work. Try listening on a rainy day. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

There are moments on this album that contemporary musicians still haven't figured out. Even aside from all this, there's a unique Cold War feeling to the songs that is irreplaceable. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

In this album Miles switched from being a great orchestrator to being a sound artist. And here is a much more coherent, if less shocking, work than "Bitches Brew", that tastefully captures the mind's zen when at work. [First added to this chart: 01/14/2015]

Released in 1963, this couldn't sound less like an album from that year, but rather almost seemed to encompass the whole of historic American music- AND the innovators of its future decades. Sometimes life is like standing at a railway station, and civiliziation is coming full steam ahead towards you- and you're thinking about a lost love on at one end of the line but the train is headed full speed the other way. A kaleidoscope of colors, musical textures, songs of friendship and communion, worldly cultures, all drowning in a hippy melting pot that's topped off with a pinch of avant-garde art. This seemingly bizarre combination nevertheless was grounded enough in recognizable flavors to win universal approval. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

While lyrically it might sound like any other "hippie" album, I sense genuine concern and elegant pleading beneath the sometimes superficial sense of the time. This album flows together very well and is best listened to in the open countryside. Spectral. [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Side 1 is Dylan giving a "f**k you" to everyone who's got him down, and with the highly unexpected delivery of electric blues. Side 2 is a milestone of the literary genre, where surrealistic and evocative poetry is delivered through flexible folk music patterns (not to mention the generational zeitgeist). Seriously, how does one record do that? [First added to this chart: 01/07/2015]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 4% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.1/100, a mean average of 89.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.0.

I really like to see some love for Hendrix, he seems to be a bit overlooked on this site... but well, that includes me actually.

I love how you aren't entirely skewed towards old or new music on this chart, I find that fairly rare on this site

So much brilliant effort put into this chart!! Your notes are extensive and personal (especially those for Illinois!), and though looking at the first couple of picks I got worried that I'd find things a little too classic-rock orientated, the smattering of jazz and hip hop provided a refreshing change from the rest of your picks. Well done!

I really dig your taste hard, man. And even though all your little descriptions are astounding, I will say that your Bringing It All Back Home is exceptionally on-point!

I really wish I could give this chart a 150/100 after seeing you say Stranger Things Have Happened is the highlight of Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace.

Quadrophenia rules! So does Superunknown. Lots of good choices here. Glad to see someone else appreciates There is Nothing Left to Lose.
