Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by BrandonC375

This is my first chart, and I chose a simple theme (My 100 Favorite Albums). I am a big fan of alt-rock (specifically albums in the garage rock revival, piano rock, and psychadelic rock subgenres), classic rock, jazz, and a fan of some pop and rap (if there are good narratives or good tongue-in-cheek lyricism). Hit me up if you have a good album recommendation within those genres that aren't already on here. Thanks!

More polished than "Is This It?", I am confident that I can put this album on shuffle and let it seamlessly entertain me song after song. The theme of giving into your impulses, temptations, and "reptile" brain is prevalent in many songs and it's all done in about 35 minutes. Just like "Is This It?", the duo of Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi on guitar is a lowkey secret weapon. I know guitarists get almost too much praise for crazy solos and incredible dexterity, but the bouncing of riffs, changes from lead to rhythm to lead part, and the ability to not overdo it are the pair's greatest accomplishment. Nikolai isn't as hidden beneath the tracks and Fabrizio doesn't sound as much like a drum machine as on the debut. All in all, people don't pay as much attention as they should to this album. It's outstanding! [First added to this chart: 05/18/2015]

Flows a lot better than "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not" but still maintains the garage rock influence. Drummer Matt Helders is featured the best on this album better than any other Arctic Monkeys album and the band as a whole is more mature and more talented on FWN. I definitely believe this is Grizzly Bear's best album. The strange blend of baroque style with psych-rock works very well and the production is impeccable hear! Some of the best I've ever heard! The middle couple songs don't hit as hard, but they're still good! Ed Droste and Daniel Rossen's writing hits home though sometimes feels a bit ambiguous. Chistopher Bear's drumming is so precise and fits perfectly and Dan Taylor's bass and production of the album is so calculating and meticulous at the right times! Favorite songs: "Two Weeks", "All We Ask", "Fine For Now", "Ready, Able". [First added to this chart: 09/29/2015]

Incredible debut album that put Arctic Monkeys on everyone's radar. Very jagged guitar riffs mixed with lyrics of nightclub life in downtown Sheffield, England mixed with awesome drumming. Need I say more? Oh yeah, "A Certain Romance" is pure brilliance! [First added to this chart: 07/11/2015]

Maybe it's my college-side speaking, but this album piques my interest in its diversity from one song to the next in terms of instrumentation. The band itself is pretty solid, but the string accompaniment and alternative uses of percussion are very mature without being snobby. Ezra Koenig also has a superb vocabulary as I had to read the lyrics to understand some of the songs. [First added to this chart: 07/11/2015]

THE BEST of the garage rock revival, "Is This It?" put The Strokes on the map with expertly crafted songs that center on every part of the band equally. The guitar parts sound very simple, but just listen to how expertly they weave into one another! [First added to this chart: 07/11/2015]

My first complete rap album I bought (I was 13) and definitely my favorite! Kanye expands his musical variation with samples from many genres while also adding entertaining skits and broadening the theme of education to social situations where someone could judge you about having money rather than not having money. A great sophomore album by Kanye! [First added to this chart: 05/06/2016]

It took me til "Superb Owl" XL to listen through every Coldplay album completely. Parachutes fell along the sweet part of my taste buds, with Coldplay putting out more of an alternative rock album, though it has their spin on alt-rock. Songs like "Don't Panic", "Shiver", "Spies", "Yellow" and "Trouble" are immediate downloads for me and really hit home. For some reason, this album isn't looked at nearly as much as it should, maybe because A Rush of Blood to the Head had "The Scientist" and "Clocks" and they were spun a ton on the radio. Parachutes is awesome though. [First added to this chart: 02/26/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 82.9/100, a mean average of 81.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 13.4.

Solid chart though maybe a little heavy on the recent decades. That and I'm not a big fan of some of your most represented artists: Arctic Monkeys, 21 Pilots, etc. it seems we really like some of the same genres though your preference may be for the rawer sound (Arctic Monkeys, Walkmen, Shins, Strokes) while I tend to go for the overproduced sound (Muse).

Love to see Ben Folds so well represented. He's a genius and extremely talented; I hope that future generations will look back at him the way we look at Elton John or Billy Joel's music. I'm guessing you've probably seen him live already if he's your favorite artist, I'd highly recommend seeing him live with an orchestra next time he does a tour like that! Incredible stuff

I replied to your comment on my chart, no idea if you got notified or not. I like that you've written about the albums.
Glad to see another Twenty One Pilots fan. :D
I also love Tame impala and Sam's Town by The Killers. I didn't include them on my chart, but I remember coming so close to xD

Aaargh! You posted Blurryface before me!!! Though it only came out a few days ago, I haven't stopped listening to it! Definitely my favorite album already...and I've been listening to a lot of music in the last few years. You have a lot of The Strokes on your list, and I definitely agree that Room On Fire is better than Is This It. ROF has more refinement to it and isn't as fuzzy, though ITI is awesome! But go twenty one pilots!
