Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by BrandonC375

This is my first chart, and I chose a simple theme (My 100 Favorite Albums). I am a big fan of alt-rock (specifically albums in the garage rock revival, piano rock, and psychadelic rock subgenres), classic rock, jazz, and a fan of some pop and rap (if there are good narratives or good tongue-in-cheek lyricism). Hit me up if you have a good album recommendation within those genres that aren't already on here. Thanks!

I've never really gotten around to enjoying good psych-rock, and this band blends the genre, along with alternative, very cleverly with its instrumentation and lyricism. This album, better than 2010's "Innerspeaker", suspends the listener into a belief that, sometimes, being alone is quite alright, though it's not preferred. "Apocalypse Dreams" and "Why Won't They Talk to Me?" are my favorites. [First added to this chart: 05/18/2015]

What a perfect blend of the best sounds of their previous albums! With the atmospheric, lush sounds of Yellow House, the pop/psychedelia and catchy-ness of Veckatimest, and the guitar usage and landscape visuals of Shields, Painted Ruins is a meticulously produced wonder! This is definitely an album that needs to be listened straight through a few times before making a judgement purely for the purpose of appreciating all of the instrumentals in each song. Ed Droste's lyrics speak of the internal emotions post-breakup while Dan Rossen's speak of a more grander, bigger environment around him. The duality of the pair's lyrics and vocals gives you the best Grizzly Bear has to offer. The album also features Chris Taylor's lead vocal debut (a very impressive one at that) and probably some of the most intricate drumming/percussion work Christopher Bear has ever done! Give this album a listen and then 10 more! Best of 2017 so far!

No other album by any other band has made me feel or think more than twenty one pilots' "Vessel". Very well written with a vast array of genre and instrumentation, this Columbus duo is very talented and very skilled at making the audience think deeply about meaningful subject matter whilst still abling them to have fun and jam out. Their new album, "Blurryface", was released yesterday, earlier than its original release date, and I know I'm very much looking forward to listening to it on a loop. In my mind, a practically perfect EP! I recommend this EP to anyone and everyone! Though there are some similarities shown here to his songs with Grizzly Bear, there is enough deviation that he keeps things very interesting! Great voice, expert guitar-work without going over the top, and wonderful arrangements. The sound hearkens to a late 60s-early 70s desert rock/indie folk album. A bit of country and soul influence as well. Reminds me a bit of The Eagles. [First added to this chart: 02/20/2018]

This album seemed to have split the band's audience in half, and I'm happy to say that I lie on the half that accepts this album as a progression for the band. And that's what this album is...progression. Only a few tracks hint toward "Is This It?", and, though I love The Strokes' sound early in their career, it's refreshing to hear something new and not as recycled. There's a lot of variation on this album, as I feel it has salutes to the band's previous 4 albums, though the salutes don't overshadow the new sounds. Favorite tracks: "One Way Trigger", "Chances", "Happy Ending". [First added to this chart: 07/11/2015]

More of a Daniel Rossen album than Ed Droste, this album seems like more of a head album than a heart album. What I mean by that is it reminds me of how to and what to think rather than pure emotion. That's not to say it's not beautifully crafted, it just has less of the emotion that I felt from the baroque-poppy Veckatimest, but still great! Like I said, I think Daniel Rossen's writing and talent really shines through here. Top tracks: "Sleeping Ute", "Yet Again", "Speaking in Rounds", "Half-Gate" and "Sun in Your Eyes". Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 82.9/100, a mean average of 81.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 13.4.

Solid chart though maybe a little heavy on the recent decades. That and I'm not a big fan of some of your most represented artists: Arctic Monkeys, 21 Pilots, etc. it seems we really like some of the same genres though your preference may be for the rawer sound (Arctic Monkeys, Walkmen, Shins, Strokes) while I tend to go for the overproduced sound (Muse).

Love to see Ben Folds so well represented. He's a genius and extremely talented; I hope that future generations will look back at him the way we look at Elton John or Billy Joel's music. I'm guessing you've probably seen him live already if he's your favorite artist, I'd highly recommend seeing him live with an orchestra next time he does a tour like that! Incredible stuff

I replied to your comment on my chart, no idea if you got notified or not. I like that you've written about the albums.
Glad to see another Twenty One Pilots fan. :D
I also love Tame impala and Sam's Town by The Killers. I didn't include them on my chart, but I remember coming so close to xD

Aaargh! You posted Blurryface before me!!! Though it only came out a few days ago, I haven't stopped listening to it! Definitely my favorite album already...and I've been listening to a lot of music in the last few years. You have a lot of The Strokes on your list, and I definitely agree that Room On Fire is better than Is This It. ROF has more refinement to it and isn't as fuzzy, though ITI is awesome! But go twenty one pilots!
