If Titus Andronicus are anything, they're ambitious. All you have to do is listen to The Monitor to see that, a one-hour+ long album that uses the Civil War as a metaphor for lead singer Patrick Stickles' life. So yea, you don't see that every day. And now we have The Most Lamentable Tragedy, just when you thought they couldn't get bigger, Titus Andronicus releases a 90-minute+ rock opera, loaded with story after story and style after style, whether it's firey punk rock, Springsteen-style 80s American rock, or some kind of Wagnerian Meat Loaf style rock, it's all over the place here. Now, normally, one would look at this, a 90-minute+ rock opera that's all over the place stylistically, and say "this is going to be so hectic and over-the-top", but the beauty is that it isn't. Titus Andronicus handle and execute the whole thing really well. The album doesn't feel too overly theatrical or like the band overstepped their bounds, they did it exceptionally well. The length, unfortunately, works against them at times, as the album gets a little long, but it doesn't detract from the album too much. It's an impressive, ambitious piece of work. At first listen, you would think Chelsea Wolfe is just another folk singer. Certainly her voice would suggest that, she has that gentle, warm, recorded with just a guitar in a cabin in the woods, kind of voice. Yet with this album, she doesn't go that route, she actually, oddly enough, incorporates a lot of metal elements into her music and that absolutely works, because this is a seriously dark album. It's Wolfe confronting the horrors in her life, specifically inspired by her sleep paralysis, which, if you google it, is a scary thing in and of itself. This album is a bringing to light of the dark, frightening feelings in life, and the combination of Wolfe's songwriting with the music makes this a really cool, powerful album. This was quite the unique experience, and honestly I wouldn't expect anything less from Jenny Hval. This is, without a doubt, a very intriguing listen, it draws you in and makes you pay close attention. Hval will jar you with random things here and there, whether it's her talking about "soft dick rock" or if it's some kind of breakneck switch in musical style, this album does repeat the same thing twice, and that's what makes it so interesting. It has a very dreamy, improvisational feel to it, like anything could change at any moment, and it keeps you engaged. It's quite an impressive work of art and while it might not be for everyone, for those that it clicks for, they'll really enjoy it. [First added to this chart: 12/04/2015]

This was quite a good psych-pop album. Very spacey, ethereal, really intriguing stuff. The guitar work is really good, it's not necessarily technically impressive, but the tone is excellent and fits in with the psych feel really well. Really thick, full guitars with solos that have a great melodic sensibility, really relying on the whole "less is more" technique of guitar, which I really appreciate and which fits in quite well with the overall feel of the album. It's not a mind-blowing album, but it's certainly an entertaining one. [First added to this chart: 12/29/2015]

Sun Hotel have decided to disband after this album, which is only their second album, and I think that kind of affects the overall tone of this piece. The album is emotional and raw, both from a lyrical and musical standpoint. It sounds like it was recorded in someone's garage or something, which adds to the raw intensity of the album. It's almost like heavy indie rock, the guitars are intricate and excellent, and the songs have a pop sensibility to them. The whole thing is really well done, a unique experience. Holly Miranda has this lush sound, these really pretty, sweeping melodies that just gently glide over you, her vocal delivery is a light as a gentle breeze. It's all very ethereal, and all very natural, like something she composed alone in a cabin in the mountains or something. This is her first album in about five years, and it's apparent that she really took her time in composing it. It feels like she went off and looked deep inside herself to find what was ultimately put on this record, an exploration of who she is. It's a beautifully done record, at times, simple and serene, like a walk through a forest and at other times, a bit more upbeat with a feeling like walking through a city at night. This is taking black metal to new heights, pushing it to its limits. This is a hard listen, mostly because it's insane. It's black metal with a healthy dose of "wtf just happened?" You've got the classic black metal assaulting drums and harsh vocals, but the guitars are all over the place, and even the drumming switches things up a bunch. Time signatures are more of a nice idea rather than something stringently followed. It's an intense album and difficult to pierce through, but really really interesting. I might like this album better than Loud City Song simply because this seems to be Julia Holter's most accessible album. Loud City Song was dissonant, it was interesting, but it was hard (for me at least) to get into, but Have You In My Wilderness is much more accessible, it's warm, it's light, it's engaging, it's an interesting album that feels personal, and it's different from what Holter's done in the past, and I applaud her for doing something different. First and foremost, Allen Stone has one of the best voices in music right now. The man has some serious soul, and especially in his live shows, he's got a ton of energy, and he just exudes it to everyone who listens to his music. His band is solid, and he just grooves, that's what he excels at, and that's what made his last album so good. With this album, we get a bit more of the same, but for the raw soul feel he's going for, this feels a little too polished. I give him credit though, because he's keenly aware of that, he's very aware of the technology he's using and how it affects his music. He's genuine, and that really does come across in his music, and because of that, he still makes some good music and has a solid album here. It's not as good as his last one, but it's still very good. [First added to this chart: 11/13/2015]

@dbz - yea dude, the new Atkins is pretty sweet too.

@mecca - I think I need to relisten to the U.S. Girls album, I liked it a lot, might eventually crack the top-100.

Man, you put some serious work into this. All those informative notes. I think the bulk of these that I know would fall into my own honorable mentions chart if I made one. Was surprised Sleater Kinney and US Girls couldn't crack your top 100.
