Whatever the line between post-metal and post-rock is, that's where Pyramids live. They walk that fine line like a tightrope, sometimes doing post-metal, sometimes doing post-rock, it's a mix, and that's what makes this album so cool. The vocals dance between harsh screams and melodic singing, all heavily reverbed, with big, powerful instrumentation, making you feel like you're hearing someone shout in a wind tunnel, everything blowing at you at full power. It's a big album, if anything, it's huge, it's a monolithic wall of sound coming at you. Pyramids sound like they're finding their way through post-metal, post-rock and a little bit of shoegaze, wandering through the genres taking what they like from each. What this album shows you is that something can be loud and heavy, and still be beautiful, like watching a majestic wave in the ocean crash on the shore. [First added to this chart: 11/05/2015]

If you wanna talk about defining doom metal, then look no further than here. This is all about death and doom, in fact, each track is a different way to die. There's suffocation, there's immolation, there's drowning and there's falling forever, with each song outlining the different ways four phantoms die in horrible, terrible ways. Along with the exceptionally depressing subject matter, is the massive music. It's like the sound of your own impending doom, slowly approaching in the distance. As if it's some kind of deadly storm that you can see is miles away, but it's coming, and it's not stopping, and there's nothing you can do but just wait for it. Bell Witch excellently blend this gigantic, monolithic-sounding doom with dashes of post-rock and even a bit of vocal melody, and it all comes together to create this huge, powerful, boulder of an album that comes rolling towards you and it's not gonna stop until it crushes you. If you've heard a Kurt Vile record before, you have a pretty good idea what any of them sound like. Vile sticks with that laid-back, reverbed, finger-picked, slightly off-kilter folk sound, and he does it pretty well. With each album comes small variations, Smoke Ring For My Halo was different than Wakin' On A Pretty Daze which was different than this album. For this, he's eased off the reverb a little (as much as he can at least) and added in a bit of banjo and piano, but it's still very much Kurt Vile. His lyrics are good, as is par for the course on his albums, all sung in his own unique delivery, and it's good stuff. It's nothing incredible, but it's a really enjoyable, relaxing folk album. There are a few juggernauts in the world of power metal. Bands like Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, these groups have been around forever and have released some of the best power metal albums of all time. Stratovarius is one of those groups, their output in the 90s is some of the best power metal around, and now they're here with their 16th album. Whereas some bands like Helloween and Gamma Ray have just kind of lost all inspiration and are just churning out whatever, Stratovarius has maintained their strength and have shown on this album that they can still consistently put out great music. The very fact that their 16th studio album is just about as good as anything they put out in the 90s is itself quite a statement. From a performance perspective, this album is great, somehow Timo Kotipello is still able to sing exceptionally well, like his voice has barely aged, and the guitar work from Matias Kupiainen is fantastic. This isn't anything different for Stratovarius, it's nothing exceptionally original, but it's just a really strong, good power metal album from one of the best bands in the genre. In 2013, Arthur Ashin (Autre Ne Veut) released Anxiety, and it was fantastic. Anxiety was the perfect title too, because it was all over the place, the whole album was neurotic and crazy, like it was about to fall apart at the seams. Here, Ashin takes that even further, he creates an album that is somehow even more anxious and crazy as his last. He's able to stuff a lot into one album, but you never get overwhelmed. There's a ton going on, a lot of polyrhythm and things of that nature, but it's not too much, it's a good balance. This isn't as good as his debut, but it's still worth a listen. I truly believe that self-censorship is a skill. The ability for a band or a musician to sit there with a ton of material that they've written and go "ok, some of this stuff really isn't that great, I'll just release some of this". There are a lot of bands out there who just write 50 songs in the course of a year and say "Oh man! I could release four albums in one year!" (see: Green Day) and then the power of the albums is strongly diminished because it's full of mediocre songs with some good ones scattered throughout. This album is Beach House's second in, like, two months, and it's not nearly as good as Depression Cherry was. It's a good album, but this all kind of sounds like Beach House b-sides, which, to be honest, is better than most other band's b-sides, but still, had Beach House combined the best parts of this album with the best parts of Depression Cherry, they would've had a life-changing album. Instead, we have a great album in Depression Cherry and a good album in Thank Your Lucky Stars. I don't want this review to sound overly-negative, I actually like this album (though that may be more attributed to my overall affinity for all things Beach House), but don't expect Depression Cherry Part II. This is probably the weakest album Beach House has put out, but even that is still a pretty good album. [First added to this chart: 10/28/2015]

So this is interesting. This is some amalgamation of a few different genre influences, namely progressive metal with gothic undertones, post-rock textures, and post-punk vocals. So what does that sound like? Well honestly it sounds mostly like post-metal with a deep voice (that's oversimplifying it drastically). It's hard to describe it, you just have to listen to it. Drawing from and using so many different influences can really weigh down an album and make it difficult to listen to, but Kontinuum are able to weave through genre with relative fluidity, which ultimately makes this a really interesting and enjoyable listen. Intronaut make a pretty unique style of progressive metal with a little bit of everything to it. Heavy riffs, weird time signatures, insane drumming, jazzy breakdowns, catchy vocals, it's all here and it's all very technical which is what makes it interesting. Specifically, the drumming needs to be called out, because it's incredible. Danny Walker's drumming on this album is some of the most creative and impressive drumming I've ever heard on a metal album. And I mean ever. Walker's drumming fits in perfectly with what the rest of the group are doing and it serves as an excellent complement. This album has a bunch of little quirks to it, and that's what makes it unique and such an engaging and intriguing listen, an excellent piece of songwriting. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2015]

This album is proof that a band can still make an old-school death metal style album and make it unique and good. It's a pretty standard formula, heavy powerful riffs, guttural vocals, melodic and impressive guitar solos, it's all here, and Horrendous does it exceptionally well. It's possible to follow a classic formula for a genre of music and still carve out your own identity, and that's what happens here on Anareta, Horrendous may not be doing anything new and innovative, but they don't necessarily need to, they're able to execute classic death metal exceptionally well. Dilly Dally take feelings of desperation and frustration and channel them into blazing guitar riffs, bombastic drums and powerfully harsh vocals. Katie Monks' voice sounds like some lovechild of 90s alternative singers, somewhere between Courtney Love and Liz Phair, and mixed with the crazy guitar-work and aggressive music, it makes for quite the listen. This isn't a subtle album, it's not an album that slowly works its way into your brain, it's an album that comes out of the gate guns blazing and assaults its way right into your heart. It's powerful stuff. [First added to this chart: 10/28/2015]

@dbz - yea dude, the new Atkins is pretty sweet too.

@mecca - I think I need to relisten to the U.S. Girls album, I liked it a lot, might eventually crack the top-100.

Man, you put some serious work into this. All those informative notes. I think the bulk of these that I know would fall into my own honorable mentions chart if I made one. Was surprised Sleater Kinney and US Girls couldn't crack your top 100.
