Most of the time, I listen to music because I want to feel something...usually I just want to feel cool. But sometimes, I hear an album and it feels really incredible...sometimes it feels important. In The Aeroplane feels important.

And the key reason to me is that it sounds so familiar. To me, it's the sound of remembering childhood... Not actual childhood...the remembering. Because the lyrics are very adult at times, but only because it is an adult remembering those innocent things and knowing that at times it wasn't so innocent...like maybe innocence is something we put on children in a bogus way. Like I never felt like a child when I was one. I just remember trying to figure it all out. But maybe that's just another bogus trip I’m imposing on my memories.

At any rate...the sounds and words of In The Aeroplane help me explore that idea of "what have I gone through" without granting any easy answers. So that makes the album honest and exciting for me. It makes the album important.

I figure that most folks that are really into records...they went through a phase when they sided with a snobbish, slightly dick-ish clique about how terrible popular music is and how great un-popular music is. When I discovered Jawbreaker...I was essentially president of that clique.

The only problem was I found Dear You before I found 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. You see Dear You is considered the "sell-out" album of the band. It's polished and slicker than the band's earlier albums. It's closer to pop than punk.

So when I began to find out that other indie folks loved Jawbreaker, I was pumped...but then I saw how they all mourned Dear You's existence.

As a young callow person, I lacked the confidence to stand up for my tastes and lead the charge in Dear You's defense. Instead, I hid my true allegiance and weaponized my snobbishness into obnoxiousness (ironically in direct defiance of the message of Boxcar).

But now I display my appreciation boldly. May 4th isn't about Star Wars to me...it's The Sluttering.

I get a lot of heat for this pick. I know it seems weird having a Blink album in the Top 10 of anything. But when I was trying to figure out what rank this album had...I kept coming back to the same realization...I love all of these songs. And if you grew up in the 90's...chances are you are familiar with most of these songs. And you never love any music more than the music you loved when you were a teen. What's my age again? When I went back to re-listen to my favorite albums to make these charts, I came across some real forgotten gems. That's really why I love this site, it helped me re-discover more than anything else. And when I came across Long Tall Weekend, I thought I was totally unfamiliar with the tracks. It was one of the first new release albums released digitally, so I guess I associated the lack of official CD with lack of familiarity. But I was totally wrong. I basically had the whole thing memorized. Music is really fun that way...it sticks with you. I really enjoyed remembering these great songs and the times spent listening to them. You probably had a vibrant local scene if you grew up in the 90's. It seems that every medium sized community in America had one. Well DFW was no different, and this album is easily my favorite from that scene. That's not to say that Funland, Dooms U.K., Brutal Juice, Baboon, Tablet or the rest aren't really great. They are. But Rocks Your Lame Ass does just that. And for that, I give thanks to Hagfish. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2011]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.8/100, a mean average of 86.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.6.

Even if the music's not really my thing, you gotta love the honesty that you put into your notes. Maybe some more picks from other countries would push this to a perfect score??

Really interesting, fantastic description for Aeroplane. Very 90s, 00s and 10s heavy but it's personal and good

While I don't like every album on this chart, I thoroughly enjoyed your comments on the top 10, and had to chuckle to myself as I remember my own group of snob-ish friends that I used to hang out with. Love a lot of the picks on here, there were a few that don't get enough credit for what they are (particularly "I See a Darkness" and "Gorilla Manor"). Will definitely be checking out the ones I don't know, particularly They Might Be Giants.
