Top 79 Music Albums of 2016 by Skinny Unknown

After #41 this is a complete mess (obviously I like all of these records, but they're in no kind of order whatsoever, largely because I haven't yet figured out how much I like them). Will get it sorted properly when I have the time (maybe).

Feels less slight and background music-y than his previous stuff, and that's definitely a good thing. It's still really nostalgic and maybe a tad too twee, but there's more natural emotional heft now, and a greater sense of focus. The (thankfully not overdone) nods to Japanese folk music are really cool as well, and give the album some thematic coherence. [First added to this chart: 06/18/2016]

Curren$y releases an obscene amount of music. He's a rapper I like a lot, yet not enough to keep up with. His slow, stoned drawl and keep-up-at-the-back flow make him a fairly singular rapper, but he's unlikely to dazzle with technical wizardry. What his languid demeanour on the mic betrays, however, is a way with potent imagery and witty one-liners that often take a few seconds to sink in. He is perhaps the ultimate mood rapper, and his main strength undeniably lies in cultivating a vibe rather than spitting a tape's worth of quotables. This, of course, makes him a perfect foil for Alchemist, one of the greatest and most underrated producers in hip-hop history. The Carrollton Heist sees Alchemist providing a selection of laidback, luxurious beats that you want to bathe in, beats that conjure images of a great lost Blaxploitation noir, beats that take in dancing bebop sax and snaking synth lines and orchestral majesty but that never really get to anything above 25mph. Meanwhile, Curren$y (and some very carefully selected guests, all of whom suit perfectly) raps about selling drugs and smoking weed. As I've said, I find it impossible to keep up with everything he puts out, and occasionally his bumbling delivery can feel a bit too drowsy to inspire, but when Curren$y gets it right - as he does over the course of half an hour here - he's one of the most enjoyable rappers around.

One of my very favourites of the current crop of up-and-coming grime MCs (alongside Novelist and AJ Tracey), this should be Jammz' breakout release. It has the spontaneous feel of a pirate radio set - and the slightly-too-inconsistent production to match, unfortunately - but on occasion his songwriting skills shine through and he proves himself to be a funny, astute lyricist with an energetic, slightly manic flow. Not as focused as this year's other great grime full-length, but just as fun and proof of Jammz' huge potential. [First added to this chart: 06/18/2016]

I prefer the more melodic moments, which have this (oxymoron alert) unsettling lullaby vibe, as well as the more mischievous moments (you know, when Frith is just pissing about with textures), to those which veer closer to greyscale drone, but the whole thing manages to feel (oxymoron alert 2) both really mysterious and really open at the same time. T_A_M is a Scottish producer who emerged from the experimental instrumental grime scene, but whose music since become more melodic and ambient with time. He still relies heavily on rumbling sub-bass, but this album is full of catchy melodic motifs, and there's plenty of space and clarity in these compositions. A bit front-loaded in terms of memorable tunes, but it's still very satisfying throughout. [First added to this chart: 06/18/2016]

- eclectic instrumentals that take in oceanic shoegaze washes and minimal metronomic synth-pop and gothic folk picking, with kozelek talking ever more redundant diaristic shit over the top -

I wrote the above ages ago, when I thought that this album would eventually drift out of my listening rotation. Still haven't got any concrete thoughts on it, and it's definitely not up to par with Perils, Benji, or Universal Themes, but I keep going back to this fucker. It's overlong and kinda drags at times, but it's also largely fucking gorgeous and can be pretty cathartic if played when in the right mood.

No less of a stylist than Future or Young Thug, this is nonetheless excellent East Coast hardcore hip-hop, albeit with a decidedly retro feel. While Gunn may not have the writerly chops of Roc Marciano, the technical precision of Ka, or the multicoloured universe-sculpting bravado of Action Bronson, he still has an endlessly listenable voice and manages to fill his rhymes with a vibrant mixture of violent threats, clued-up fashion references, and street knowledge slogans. The beats here fit nicely into that NY lineage of RZA-influenced claustrophobic soul, and if nothing else it's refreshing to hear an album that's so deliberately and distinctively regional in a landscape that feels less so every day. - intense, often beautiful art-pop that makes use of some very white people jazz-rock style shit (a la food or the neil cowley trio) and contains lots of references to his then-imminent death, and probably his closest album in terms of structure to station to station, which is obviously a good thing - [First added to this chart: 01/29/2016]

This is kinda in line with the TJO/Myhr/Hval release, in that it's a sinister, playful take on (what sounds like) freely improvised folk music, but is actually really intricately composed. This one is more traditional, leaning heavily on the fiddle, and it's kinda like half-remembered crabbing on the shore as a kid. [First added to this chart: 06/18/2016]
