Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by CharlieBarley

Welcome one, welcome all. These are some of my favourite albums of all time. Each album means something to me, even the relatively new ones. Just over half of them I discovered in the period of the early 1990s when I was aged 15-20, although not all of those albums are 90's albums. That was when I got into music in a big way, as many teenagers do. Then current music and many classic albums. And my personal discovery of music is ongoing. For me, music is a form of connection with something greater, of solace, of self-expression and a way of channelling feelings. There are many memories here. And new ones are still being created. I have tried to make this chart represent periods from many different stages in my life also. It is subject to change as I remember other albums I like or as I discover new, or even older albums. Enjoy!

Great album. My favourite by Moby. I like the tracks Extreme Ways, We Are All Made Of Stars and Harbour (with Sinead O'Connor), best. [First added to this chart: 01/28/2018]

I heard this only a few years ago and I love it. Jimmy Cliff's contributions are great, albeit two tracks are repeated. But what we have is a fine album. Pressure Drop by Toots and the Maytals is one of my favourite tracks of all time as is Cliff's Many Rivers To Cross. The Melodians, with the original version of Rivers of Babylon, is another highlight. [First added to this chart: 10/10/2018]

Fabulous 60s early prog rock record, some say the first prog album, (although I never used to be a big prog fan, Pink Floyd and these guys aside.) and what an album it is! Bold, original, experimental and brilliant. And with very different moods and styles throughout. I love it. I actually got it out of the library on a recommendation from a book about acclaimed albums, a few years ago. I loved the opening track, 21st Century Schizoid Man but it took repeated listens before I fell in love with the rest of the album. Epitaph and Court of the Crimson King are totally awesome too. It really is a work of genius, and decades ahead of its time. Go hear it if you haven't already. And I saw them live in 2019. Great gig. Amazing musicians. And a terrific lead singer in Jakko Jakszyk. They had three drummers. It was powerful stuff. [First added to this chart: 04/09/2017]

This is an essential listen from a talented artist. It means a lot to me. Let Him Dangle is a great song, as is Tramp The Dirt Down, This Town and the mighty Veronica, which he co-wrote with Paul McCartney. They wrote a good few songs together at this time. I like a lot of Elvis Costello songs. He is one of my faves. [First added to this chart: 01/12/2024]

An awesome album that at first I wasn't so hot on. Opening track Maggot Brain blew my mind when I first heard it, it's a sublime track with an amazing guitar solo by Eddie Hazell. But I was at first disappointed that the rest of the album didn't match up. But then I heard it again and again and I really grooved with it. It has lots of great tracks, and closing track Wars of Armageddon is another fine song. I am gonna go and listen to their whole back catalogue now. Clinton and co are geniuses. Quintessential 70s album from the folksy duo. And what an album it is. Sad songs, happy songs, Hispanic songs, groovy songs. It has the lot. One of those albums that, when you hear it through you want to listen to it again. An album of my early childhood years, my Parents' had the cassette. I used to play it countless times growing up. I also like the Sounds of Silence album. [First added to this chart: 10/18/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.9/100, a mean average of 93.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.

There is so much to like about this chart. The intro is spot on - how music is a connection to something greater in one's life (& that's why certain albums, often dismissed by the masses, can find a home in someone's greatest 100 chart). Your chart speaks honestly (no peer pressure) and it is the kind of chart I like to spend time with and will read from no.1 to no.100. Definitely one of my favourite charts on this site. Nicely put together CB - could very well be my first 100!
