The highlight of Swans' incredible trilogy of massive albums trades some of the atmosphere of The Seer for heavier songs. This gives almost every track a huge amount of energy equalling that of earlier albums such as Filth, but without going for a completely brutal sound. The album also manages to perfect a balance of eerie songs such as 'some things we do' and enormously powerful songs such as the album's centrepiece 'bring the sun/ Toussaint L'Ouvateure'. With most songs going beyond ten minutes Swans give themselves the time in most songs to have them go through various phases whilst still including their very effective use of repetition.

After an extended hiatus of 4 years D'Angelo's surprise 2014 release is the best RnB album of the decade so far. Released in a time of turmoil in US race relations Black Messiah does a perfect job of showing the sadness resulting from US racial injustice. The album feels particularly prophetic with some of its most political songs such as 'the Charade' being written before high profile cases of police brutality. When D'Angelo strays from the main theme of the album he still delivers some great songs such as the tender 'Really Love' and he playful 'Sugah Daddy'.

On You're Dead! Flying Lotus' chaotic instrumentals are at their best because of the clear theme of the whole album. The eerie atmosphere is helped out by the vision that You're Dead! is meant to sound like death. Vocal features on the album also add to this with strong bars from Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and distant sounding singing from Thundercat and Angel Deradoorian.

Before RTJ2 Run the Jewels were already one of the most vicious hip hop acts around but this album/ mixtape took them to new heights, in the mainstream only being bested by Death Grips. Again Killer Mike's vicious vocals fitted perfectly with El-P's harsh industrial beats on the more aggressive tracks where El-P's verses also held up. The same is also true for the calmer tracks that often contain a powerful political message such as police brutality, war, and the impact of the drugs trade on dealers. The restriction on guest rappers is also a good move with the only guest verses, coming from Zack De La Rocha and Gangsta Boo, both having a clear impact on their songs.

Thanks man, I'll probably do write ups for the top 50 for the moment so I don't have to end up removing albums with notes sometime later.

Wow, thanks for the incredibly detailed and thoughtful notes on many of the top albums on this chart! They really add a lot of personality, and they make me want to hear some of the albums I've either passed over too quickly or ignored altogether, such as Undun. I love many of the albums here, especially Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit; St. Vincent; Visions; and Lost in the Dream. Great work!
