I often have a hard time getting into metal because of the extreme sound and the screaming vocal style. Deafheaven and their blend of black metal, shoegaze and post rock to me isn't really all-metal though - it's moving, lovely, romantic, with quiet piano passages, but also with phases of precise, speedy drumming, massive walls of sound and heavy guitar solos. Screechy beauty.

King Gizzard, in my opinion, are on a good way of saving rock music. The genre is bound to a basic set of 4 instruments and yet this band manages to reinvent themselves unbelievably from record to record. They just jam and their music is so much fun, whether it is boogie rock or thrash metal, psychedelic folk or experiments in microtonal tuning. One should show every "back in the days"-oldhead this album: It captures the energy of King Gizzard best by displaying their unbelievable skill and theirfun . Apart from the brilliant idea of an infinte album, which you could loop forever, as each track flows seemlessly into the next one, this is just banger after banger.

I purchased this album on it's release date, Bowie's 69th birthday. I really digged the tracks he had released in advance and was pumped for this record. I played it throughout the weekend and it helped me through a bad hangover. When the news broke in that Bowie had passed on the Monday after, the whole concept of this album instantly made sense. The sinister lyrics, the cryptic videos, the elegiac music. It was a genius move to pull out such a strong swan song as his final record. While he has always had a jazzy vibe throughout his career, Bowie perfected his jazzyness on ★, with the sax being the lead instrument instead of the guitar. The last two tracks are more classic Bowieesque tracks and manage to let David sparkle one last time. Thank you very much for this.

The very first moment of this album is Killer Mike hyping himself up for this record in the usual, aggressive RTJ-way. From this moment onwards, you know what's up: "Run The Jewels' the answer, your question is what's poppin'?" I really admire El-P as a producer. The bass-boosted electronic beats complement the aggressive rapping style of this duo. In turn, this sets the right mood for the lyrics with Mike and El spitting a tirade of sociocritical, witty and politically radical bars. The best example is "Close Your Eyes", the track that hooked me with this collective. After stepping into the genre with Kendrick, RTJ really dragged me into hip hop with this album.

Surely, one can still manage to trait back Tyler's roots to the somewhat lyrically extreme alternative sounding hip hop on tracks like Who Dat Boy and I Ain't Got Time. But with the rest of the tracklist, the "silly boy of rap music" brings us a deeply personal, intimate sound that takes big steps towards the neo soul he would later further implement into his music. Who would have thought, that Tyler, the creator would release a concept album about solitude and feeling lonely. With all the emo and soundcloud rappers that burst onto the scene this decade, the topic is not groundbreaking, but yet so much more touching and believable on this record that blends lyrical melancholia with an upbeat sound.

I stumbled upon this band while I was swiping on tinder lol. One girl had their amazing song "Dripping Sun" as her favourite. As always when I liked the short sample, I would go on to add the song to my spotify playlist. When I heard it in full length, I was blown away. Such an intimite sound, one can see the blunt clouds popping up in the room when listening to this. Well, I didn't match with the cute girl but I found this great psychedelic band. I would like to be the guy who is like "I only use tinder to find some new dope new tracks", but well, that wouldn't be the whole truth.

It took years for me to discover Beach House - I knew that their music would appeal to me but I never listened into it until I stumbled to this CD on a flea market in Freiburg. Thank god for me and thank god Beach House got so famous! They effecively managed to remove the dust from dream pop. Their version of this lovely, guitar heavy sound is more upbeat, more optimistic than the first wave of bands in the 90s - the white noise is not whiter, but still brighter. This is due to the more modern, synthetic beat, which brings more liveliness into the music. It manages to create nostalgia for both a time that I wasn't even alive yet and at the same time for the time that is yet to come.

King Gizzard released 15 albums in this decade, 5 of which in 2017 - surely, it was the year of the Gizz! So there should be something for everyone who likes guitar music in their catalouge. Polygondwana is their best effort at fusing progressive rock with their distinct psychedelic sound. The centre piece of course is the heavy acid rock opening track Crumbling Castle. But I also like the flow of the following tracks, as they are more mellow and complex.

The most prominent genre within Germanys youth in the tens clearly was hip hop. I never got the appeal of German hip hop, it sounded brutal, sexist and dumb (but even I had to acknowledge the eloquency of German rappers) - that didn't change, as I became openminded about musical genres. Only OG Keemo managed to really impress me. This album was praised as the German TPAB moment by media. While Keemo's bars are outer-worldly and display the ups and downs of his Gangsta lifestyle as a Black indivual in Germany, the cool, beat-heavy production by Funkvater Frank really makes this hip hop record so outstanding, that I won't believe that it was made in Germany. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.3/100, a mean average of 92.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.
