My musical journey started as a fan of U2 at the age of 13. At some point, I felt the need to expand my taste and was keen to find acts that have the same vibe as my then-favourite band. Around that time, Arcade Fire released Reflektor, which was praised as "the band's Achtung Baby" - which happened to be my favourite U2-album. While I enjoyed the first disc more at that time, I would consider the second disc superior nowadays. The first disc show Arcade Fire opening up to both world, Caribbean influenced music as well as marvellous dance tracks. The second disc has them picking up a more emotional, atmospheric sound - with amazing production by none other than the LCD Soundsystem. While it isn't as opulent and warm as Funeral or The Suburbs, Reflektor still manages - in my eyes - to be an equal indie rock masterpiece.

Preoccupations' - or Viet Cong, as they were formerly known as - debut album has nothing to add to the already extremely diverse musical landscape of the '10s. Fuck, it hasn't even something to add to the genre of post punk. But this unbelievably destructive musical landscape that you find yourself being thrown into with the tramping opening track Newspaper Spoons, and that continues to crunch you throughout the whole nine tracks, has really convinced me, that this has to be not only one of my favourite album of the decade, but the best post punk record ever, 30 years after the genre's decline. Yes, this is even more nihilistic than Joy Division. On some points, Viet Cong is just heavy noise, on other moments, it's almost catchy. An album like a dentist drill.

The most exciting journey into any suburbs ever. The power of Arcade Fire is expressed through their ability to write down their own nostalgia, bring it to life through their music and in the end make the listener feel nostalgic as well. I never grew up in the suburbs, I never learnt to drive there and I never left only to come back and rediscover it later. But I think what this whole conceptual work really is about, is growing up, leaving childhood behind. And that is what makes The Suburbs so relatable. Also the music shows just what this Canadian band is best at - sweet indie rock that is magnified through opulent baroque instrumentation - while also extending their facets.

Moody electronic melodies and continuous beats, especially on the latter half, with hypnotising jazz instrumentation and characteristics make BBNG's first entirely self-written album the perfect gateway drug into the genre of the connoisseures.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.3/100, a mean average of 92.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.
