Similarly to 1997's Homogenic, this feels like an amalgamation of virtually every interesting musical movement of the mid-90s. So good I can even overlook "It's Oh So Quiet", (which I personally find unlistenable, and I don't mean that in the Oh-look-at-what-they-did-there-let-us-stroke-our-chins-Metal Machine Music-type of unlistenable, just unlistenable as in awful). Hyperballad is probably one of the best songs of the entire decade. [First added to this chart: 01/02/2017]

This sounded at least five years ahead of its time, as Autechre releases are prone to. Back in 1995, it seemed like music from another planet. [First added to this chart: 01/02/2017]

I make no bones about the fact that I'm an absolute nerd when it comes to mid-90s JRPGs, and Chrono Trigger was one of the highlights. Legend has it that Mitsuda suffered from burn-out midway through composing this soundtrack, leaving it up to the one and only Nobuo Uematsu to come and save the day - which needless to say did the quality of the work here absolutely no harm. There's something rather romantic about the Jewel story, a singer-songwriter who tours and tours the breadth and length of the United States for years and years before word finally gets around and she achieves the stardom she craved -- whether that story is genuine or just another piece of record company-manufactured bullshit is hard to tell, and possibly neither here nor there, since the emotions on display seem genuine enough. It's unfortunate that her subsequent output never matched this debut. [First added to this chart: 07/06/2017]

This album is not without its weak spots (Connection and Waking Up suffer from the familiar Britpop disease of copying classic riffs to the extent that they basically overstep the line between homage and plagiarism by several light years), but its strong points (namely Stutter, one of the best debut singles of the early 90s, and Line Up, a great great great opener) are a consolation price worth having.

Unfortunately the band fell victim to another Britpop disease, ie: hyped as utter immortal rock gods by the London music press for five minutes before fading into obscurity, never to be seen again. See also: Dodgy, Boo Radleys, Babybird, Catatonia, etc. That said, word has it that Justine Frischmann is doing well as an artist in California these days, so kudos to her.

No modesty in the album title, but the presence of Didgeridoo or Analogue Bubblebath actually justified it. [First added to this chart: 01/02/2017]

I wish I had a time machine so I could travel back to, say, 1993 and tell kids "Guess what, the drummer from Nirvana? Yeah, him? He can write songs! And he can sing! And in the late 2010s they will call him music's Bill Murray!". The confused reaction on their faces would have absolutely been worth the meltdown in the time-space-continuum and consequential apocalypse I'd have caused. *shrugs*

Oh, musically? A very solid debut that none of its successors ever matched in my opinion (the universal love and acclaim for The Colour And The Shape be damned, soz guys).

Even though Play is a great record and one of the musical highlights of the late 90s in general, I very much prefer the brooding, apocalyptic, sitting-in-his-room-and-pondering-the-state-of-the-world, straight edge Moby we see here, to the hedonistic, party-going, drug-taking, groupie-shagging hey-look-at-me-I'm-one-of-the-cool-kids-now Moby we saw a few years later. I'm not angry at you, Moby, I'm just a little disappointed. [First added to this chart: 01/02/2017]

One of these bands that were seemingly omnipresent in the mid-90s (and on my stereo, albeit on the now-defunct music cassette format), the UK music press effectively stopped covering Gene once the Britpop bandwagon steamed out of view and over a cliff edge at some point in 1997-98 (which in turn does scant justice to the fact that 2001's Libertine is one of the most underrated albums out there, but that's a story for another BEA list).

On another note, lead singer Martin Rossiter is these days very much present on Twitter and generally seems like a good bloke.

The memories, man!
I was in my first year at Uni the end of this year.
A lot of these albums are the soundtrack to my youth.
