An album encompassing some of the biggest musical highlights of the decade. Corgan and the Pumpkins were at their zenith here, mixing the brutal hard rock of songs like Jellybelly with more restrained pieces like Cupid de Locke. There are the classics, of course (Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Zero, 1979, Tonight Tonight - the latter two of which I heart, and then some) but also unfairly lesser-known gems like By Starlight, We Only Come Out At Night, or the widely underrated title track that starts off this positively demented magnum opus. The kind of album that made being a teenager in the mid-90s a rather awesome business. [First added to this chart: 07/06/2017]

Sometime in late 1995 I had my first part-time job, aged 16, at a fast food outlet which shant be named here. What did I do with my first earnings? Why, I spent all of it on records, of course. This one I bought solely because I liked the cover, having absolutely no idea what to expect musically (that was obviously in the days before Wayne Coyne became the avantgarde rock maestro any halfway self-respecting music fan knows him as nowadays), a decision I did not regret one tiny bit. There's something rather romantic about the Jewel story, a singer-songwriter who tours and tours the breadth and length of the United States for years and years before word finally gets around and she achieves the stardom she craved -- whether that story is genuine or just another piece of record company-manufactured bullshit is hard to tell, and possibly neither here nor there, since the emotions on display seem genuine enough. It's unfortunate that her subsequent output never matched this debut. [First added to this chart: 07/06/2017]

I wish I had a time machine so I could travel back to, say, 1993 and tell kids "Guess what, the drummer from Nirvana? Yeah, him? He can write songs! And he can sing! And in the late 2010s they will call him music's Bill Murray!". The confused reaction on their faces would have absolutely been worth the meltdown in the time-space-continuum and consequential apocalypse I'd have caused. *shrugs*

Oh, musically? A very solid debut that none of its successors ever matched in my opinion (the universal love and acclaim for The Colour And The Shape be damned, soz guys).

Even though Play is a great record and one of the musical highlights of the late 90s in general, I very much prefer the brooding, apocalyptic, sitting-in-his-room-and-pondering-the-state-of-the-world, straight edge Moby we see here, to the hedonistic, party-going, drug-taking, groupie-shagging hey-look-at-me-I'm-one-of-the-cool-kids-now Moby we saw a few years later. I'm not angry at you, Moby, I'm just a little disappointed. [First added to this chart: 01/02/2017]

The memories, man!
I was in my first year at Uni the end of this year.
A lot of these albums are the soundtrack to my youth.
